Rev. James La Belle and Dr. Joel Beeke have teamed up in an effort to bring the profitable teachings of the English Puritans to the contemporary church. They plan to do this by addressing important themes from the perspective of the Puritans, answering the question, "What did the Puritans teach about this?" Their first book was released last year: Living by God's Promises and is the first in a multi-volume set they have planned. In the first four chapters it seeks to explain what the promises of God are and what God has promised us by them. Chapter 5 is a transitional chapter, reviewing the foundational instruction of the earlier chapters and giving some basic instructions on applying the promises. And then, in chapters 6-9, four specific areas are addressed in order to show you how to apply and live by the promises of God in daily life. These four areas are: Afflictions, Times of Temptation and Sin, Fighting Sin, and Pursuing Holiness. Added to the book is an almost exhaustive Appendix of all the promises in Scripture as compiled by Edward Leigh, one of the Puritans whose writings they consulted. The book is instructive and edifying, explanation followed by application, and following each chapter are several study questions which can be used either for personal review or with a study group. It will make a great devotional for yourself or a perfect gift for someone else. Please be sure to visit heritagebooks.org to order. It's also available as an audiobook for your commuting friends! And be on the lookout for their next volume, Living Zealously, to be released in April 2012!
