A friend recently loaned me a series of tapes entitled 'The Marrow Controversy' by Dr Sinclair Ferguson. I confess that my understanding of this 18th Century controversy that raged among the reformed clergy of Scotland has been greatly helped by the way in which Dr Ferguson approaches his subject... For most of us, the 'Marrow Controversy' may seem to be one of those recondite, antiquated controversies that evolved among intellectuals, and therefore has no practical bearing upon the life and ministry of the 21st Century reformed Pastor, how wrong we are to think such! Dr Ferguson clearly presents the historical side of the controversy, which is in itself a blessing; but what struck me most of all was the overwhelming practical and pastorally related ramifications that the 'Marrow Controversy' has for today's reformed Pastor and his work. The errors of 'Antinomianism' and 'Legalism' are dealt with and are shown to be at the heart of almost all pastorally related problems. I urge all in pastoral ministry to listen to these messages and know the power of presenting a Gospel that does not leave the Christian floundering within a legal framework of conditions and terms, but growing and delighting in the abounding Grace of a Covenant God! The unconverted also are presented with an unconditional gospel that has for its foundation, the Pure Grace of God...
