Proverbs 24:30 I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of a man lacking sense, 31 and behold, it was all overgrown with thorns; the ground was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down. 32 Then I saw and considered it; I looked and received instruction. 33 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, 34 and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.

Most of us don’t have fields. But in that day a field was a man’s capital, his means of providing for his family. By today’s standard we would look at a man’s financial situation. Not does he have a lot of money, but is he responsible with what he has. If you don’t have a plan to provide health insurance, but you still spend money on parties, movies or concerts – you are a child, and your field has gone fallow.

Money is not simplistic. The temptation as you teach the bible is always to be simplistic. There are some who would say it is bad to be wealthy, you should give it all away and live with the poor. Others will say it is a sign of poor faith if you are not wealthy. You should be wealthy, and wear your wealth as a sign of God’s blessings. Both are wrong.

You are not bad if you have money. God’s plan is for the wealthy to give generously to others.

“You will have many struggles, money won’t be one of them.”

2 Corinthians 9:10 He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.

Wealthy people have a place in God’s economy and a responsibility. That responsibility is to give extravagantly, not to live extravagantly.

You are not good if you have money.

On the other side, God has graced many of his people by giving them strong faith and little money.

James 2: 5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him?

The amount of money you have does not reveal your heart. how you earned your money and what you do with it tells the world who you are and what you worship.
