Recession Watch
SATURDAY, JANUARY 31, 2009

I went from Lowes to Great Clips today, and looked for signs of the recession as I went.

Lowes had lower prices on almost all the stuff I looked at. I still spent too much, but every little bit helps. They seem to be in recession mode, or at least in worried-about-Harbor-Freight mode, with the lower prices. Lowes seems to be bracing themselves for the recession. (They ought to consider reducing their excessive packaging; I bought 2 things that came with cases/pouches, and the items were outside the pouches and a huge clamshell plastic case covered both.)

I passed not one but two jam-packed Starbucks. No recession there. I don't know where Starbucks is struggling, but it's not near me.

Great Clips is in a shopping center where a new Yoga center just opened, and they were jam-packed. If people can afford Yoga classes, they're not having a recession. I marvel at how many people that place attracts.

Great Clips was doing a booming business - I get there when they open, and had 2 people in front of me. This week, though, they had a coupon in the mail circular, so several people (including me) had that coupon in hand. They're not having a recession: One of the stylists drove up to the place in a BMW! I thought she was going to Yoga class, but she went in and started cutting hair.
