Irony: Pope Calls For Simple Christmas

In utterly gonzo news, the AP reports: "Pope Benedict XVI says that tough times can give back simplicity and solidarity to holiday celebrations." As unbelievable as it sounds, the Pope is calling for people to "rediscover what he calls 'the warmth, simplicity, friendship and solidarity' contained in authentic Christmas values."

And this is the Pope, the guy who lives in opulent luxury in a palace filled with art treasures, gold, and other wealth. And he's talking about simplicity. When have high Roman Catholic officials ever faced tough times?

We can only hope that Pope Benedict XVI will set an example by divesting the Vatican of some of its opulence to help the poor, suffering Roman Catholics around the world, and call an immediate end to money-for-religious-favors traditions of that church. It will probably be a cold day in Dante's Inferno when the Vatican sells the least little bauble and donates the money to a poor person, but we can hope.
