Fear Not - Jim Scudder, Jr.

Today's Scripture: And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last. Revelation 1:17

How amazed John must have been when he heard a voice that sounded like a trumpet while he was alone on the island of Patmos. He knew Jesus well and had even seen Him transfigured on the mountain before He ascended to heaven, but what he was about to experience was beyond awe-inspiring.

In that moment, John saw Jesus in all of His glory. He goes on to write about the astounding image of God. In Revelation 1:13-16we see that He had a robe and a breastplate like that of a priest. His feet were as gleaming brasswhich left footprints of purity and righteousness. His voice roared as the sound of many waters. Through it, John could feel the might of God. From His mouth came a two-edged sworddepicting His living Word that discerns our thoughts and intentions. His countenance was radiant like the sun. When John saw this, he fell on his face, and Jesus assured him to fear not. At that time, John must have experienced the peace that passes all understanding.

John wrote this account to give us peace, strength, and a sense of the incredible nature of God. In this beautiful image of Christ, we find glory, power, and might. We see a heavenly strength and majesty that surpasses all earthly power that has ever been or is to come.

On this earth, there are many things that cause us to fear. Sometimes the Lord calms the storm, but sometimes He allows it to rage and He calms His child. Even though we live in frightening times, when we reflect on how mighty our God is, our obstacles pale in comparison, our pain eases, and our hope is renewed.

Face today armed with the truth that your God is greater than your circumstances. Your Lord is more powerful than your pain, and your Savior is stronger than your fear.

Devotional by Jim Scudder, Jr.
