Jesus canNOT be God, say the Witnesses!
(Q=q uestioner. JWA=Jehovah's Witness Answer. CA=Christian answer) Romans 14:7-9. “…we live to the Lord… we die to the Lord… to this end Christ died and came to life again, so that He might be the Lord…” But, NWT “…we live to Jehovah… we die to Jehovah… to this end Christ dies and came to life again, so that He might be the Lord…”
Q. There seems to be some inconsistency in this text. Do you see it?
JWA. I understand what you are saying, but we have been consistent to our discovery of who Jesus really is. We had to create a seemingly inconsistent series of statements to convey the consistency of doctrine. Doctrine to us is more important than style.
Q. Indeed it is. We believe your doctrine is false, and you have consistently conveyed the idea in the NWT. You have, first of all, inserted “Jehovah” in a text where no extant MSS does such. It is clear that you wanted to do this in every portion of the text, but you met up with one called Jesus in verse 9, and the game was over.
CA: The same Greek word, “Kurios”, was used where NWT has put Jehovah twice and Lord once. But we know that “Kurios” means “Lord” and could have been placed in all three statements. But if they did that, they would be proclaiming that Jesus is the one we live to and die to, and in their thinking, that is impossible. We live to Jehovah – God. But it was not Jehovah, but Jesus, who died for us. The separation in their mind is vast between God and Jesus. For the Christian, there is no separation. Either Jehovah or Lord would fit, though there is no textual justification for the former.
