Receive With Thanksgiving!
A Thought From the Word
“Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer . ” I Timothy 4:3-5
Paul was warning Timothy here about false teachings that would affect the church. This particular teaching seemed to equate a high degree of spirituality with the denial of legitimate physical pleasure. Abstaining from certain meats and from the institution of marriage appears to be been made requirements for a supposed righteousness.
The reality is, physical enjoyments of the body are not the end-all of life that many make them out to be. But, God in His goodness has made us physical creatures with the capacity to enjoy marriage and good food! He is a benevolent and kind Creator. We can enjoy the unique and intimate closeness of marriage, and turkey and dressing to the glory of God!
But notice in this short section of Scripture how that Paul put emphasis on receiving such gifts “with thanksgiving.” How easy it is to take your spouse, if married, for granted. Or, to “say a prayer” at mealtime but not be deeply thankful to our Father in heaven for His provisions. These physical blessings should not lead us away from God, but rather point us towards Him as the Giver of these gifts. A mark of the condemned unbeliever is that of ingratitude towards the Creator (Rom. 1:21). May we as believers in Christ remind ourselves frequently (at least three times a day!) of the faithful and generous provisions of our Savior. May it lead us to love and follow Him more closely.
