Deuteronomy 22:12. Why a ruling about tassels? What are tassels? Tassels are fringes or simply strings, commanded for God’s people to set them and their religion apart from the others. The sin of the Pharisees was enlarging and beautifying their own clothing parts as to set them, the Pharisees, apart from the rest of the Jewish people.
Deuteronomy 23:1-2. Why these exclusions from the assembly of the Lord? The castrated, the illegitimate, were most often results of Gentile paganism, and were thus not permitted to be a part of Israel’s officialdom. Other passages allow one and all to enter into worship with the Jews, so commentaries have unanimously agreed that this statement has to do with the leadership, the representatives of Israel to the world. These must be Jewish in every sense of the word.
Isaiah 56:3-6 foresees a day when this attitude toward outward deprivation will be reversed, as God will be looking at the inward man exclusively.
Deuteronomy 28:47. What does the Lord require of His prospering people? Whatever you give to the Lord during this time, do it with great joy and thanksgiving.
Deuteronomy 34. Who wrote the last chapter of Deuteronomy? As scrolls were combined originally, it is possible to conceive that the last chapter of Deuteronomy is the first of Joshua. Joshua is the main candidate for authorship of this last chapter. Some speculate it was Ezra the scribe, many years later. Not a profound point. Not a problem. The Holy Spirit was in charge, and if He allowed Moses to write the whole thing before he dies, as some aver, so be it!
