On Tuesday last week, a baby girl was born in the New England region of the US. Unknown to her, her birth instantly changed the lives of a number of people. Her parents became a proud father and mother, and for the next few weeks and months, their lives will revolve around her. My wife Haydee and I became grandparents, reminding us of our advancing age. Our sons became uncles and their cousins became uncles and aunts. Our parents became great grandparents.
It’s amazing how the birth of a baby could lead to so many exciting changes. Even now it’s hard to believe that our daughter who was once our first baby is now a mother. It was fascinating for me to just watch our granddaughter sleeping, blissfully contented or at times seemingly smiling at some pleasant dreams. But at the same time, it’s a reminder of the endless passage of time. A time to be born, and a time to die.
Even more infinitely astounding, we are reminded that 2,000 years ago, a baby boy was born in a manger. The angel told His “father”, “She (Mary) will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." (Matthew 1:21).
Jesus came to a sinful and broken world. He lived amongst imperfect people and was tempted in all points as we are, yet without committing a single sin. At the end of His life, He cried “It is finished!” to signify that He has paid the penalty of the sins of His people. As a result, millions of lives are being transformed as they acknowledge Him their Lord and Savior.
Praise God indeed for the birth of a baby girl last week. But praise Him forever more, for the birth of His Son!
