Christians Responsible for Most 'Hateful Internet Speech,' Says Washington Post Religion Reporter

An editor for The Washington Post's religion section claimed that Christians were behind the majority of nasty and vile feedback she had received throughout her career in an op-ed Thursday.

Sally Quinn, the moderator of the religion website On Faith, which spun off from The Washington Post last year, described the earliest "hate emails" she had "did not just attack what I wrote ... but were also vicious ad hominem attacks."

"I can't tell you how many people wrote in to say that I was a whore and a slut and so much worse that I can't even write it here. And these all came from Christians," wrote Quinn. "I was going to hell. I had made a pact with the devil. Jesus and God hated me. One man wrote that he hoped I would get in a car accident, that the gas tank would explode and I would be burned alive. He was a God-fearing Christian, and he ascertained that I obviously was not one." ...

So glad that things are working out for you, Michael, in this new place God wants you to be now. He is stretching your faith and I will be praying for you and your family as you travel this new road. I have been blessed already from your one sermon and you most certainly have God's calling to do it. I will be listening to your sermons as well. God's blessings on you and your family.

Dorcas, your comments are very uplifing, God bless you and your family. I have thought of you often in your situation that caused you to ask for prayer. I have prayed for you and for God to work things out for your family matters.Seems like we are being attacked and each of us in different ways. Need to keep each other in our prayers. Who knows, maybe God has brought us all together for this reason. I know I have learned from others even when in disagreement and grown some in the process.

And to s c, you are right also in your comments. It is hard to just read words and it can be misconstrued what you are trying to say. No, we as christians are human with human emotions andso are capable of hurt feelings that we have and sometimes give to others. I understand Jay'Jay's comments and the reason he said it because I felt the same way when I tried to say I understood Michael's feelings in all this as well. Sometimes people will lash out in anger when hurt or misunderstood.i was using myself as an example of that.My husband's sisters have blamed me for the many problems between me and my mother-in-law. I have tried for years to work it out with her but she refuses to do her part to make our relationship work. No one but my husband and his brother understand what others refuse to see. I like Michael and he has been kind to me
and encouaging so I wanted to let him know that I cared. So sorry if I offended someone else like you Jay Jay.

Dolores...
"She hath done what she could." Mark 14:8.
Our Saviour loves to see us do all we can.
Let us not only work, but abound in the work of the Lord, for our labour is not in vain.

Ladybug, if it weren't for you and your strong faith and kind spirit, as well as some others on here, I would have not even attempted to continue on here. But you have lifted my spirit many times with your comments. You have a Barnabus spirit very encouraging.

Proper perspective is key in these misunderstandings. First, Dolores, very gracious words to Mr. Hranek. And to Jay Jay's credit, he did apologize for speaking hastily out of "agitation". None of us are exempt. Let's try to give Jay Jay the benefit of the doubt and answer his concerns without assuming the motive behind it. Sometimes when someone is merely addressing a topic, others can readily take it out of context. There but for the grace of God...we all have a tendency to draw conclusions without having all of the facts.

Projection is when you acscribe certain thoughts or attitudes present in ones self to someone else. Im not saying you really are doing that, I just thought Id let you know what projection is.

I do think however that it would be wise to just let this go.

Jay Jay,

This comment from you proves otherwise...

You are going through others comments and adding your own paraphrase, it is a blatant attempt to attack and discredit Michael...and it needs to stop. Instead of seeking to defend your actions, seek the Lord in prayer. Please, take this as wise counsel.

I'm not trying to rehash anything! Dr. Whodat called what I had said "projection". I still don't know what he means by that, so I asked him about it. I then explained what I had been talking about before. Not trying to rehash anything!

Jay Jay,
Please, stop trying to keep this going by constantly rehashing it. You are attempting to make things worse than what they are, it's called meddling and it's a sin. 1 Peter 4:15 comes to mind, "But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters."
I urge you to leave this matter alone, for the sake of Christ's name. To continue to hold onto things only leads to sin. You are picking through others comments and pulling out bits and pieces in an attempt to slander Michael, you need to stop. Please, take to heart these verses from Ephesians 4, " Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."

What is exactly is projection? I merely refered to Mr. Hraneks rude and nasty responses. Is that what's bothering you?

First thank you so much for your gracious posts to me. It was a joy to share with Sarah, my wife, about you having a son who is a driver, we will keep him, as well as you and your family in our prayers

And to give you an update
I am no longer driving...in paying off some bills and especially in how being away and not home on a dependable schedule was increasingly hard on Sarah, I have come home

There is a lot to this story and God's providence in the timing...I needed to drive to Georgia to help my daughter in a matter for one and a lot more besides I could not have done if I was away driving

We are by no means rich but I have retirement from a former job which frees me up for ministry, 'traveling the roads' locally so to speak

So again let me express my appreciation for your graciousness and your faith, I trust God you are a blessing and an encouragement to many in the family of God

Just listened to the sermon about Glen Beck and it is truth spoken. I found it interesting in that I just recently had a visit from two mormon missionaries. They were clean and very polite, one did all the talking. Started off asking questions which I answered. Finally, I was asked to read this book he had( not the Bible) and when I
finished they would come back and talk with me about it. He assured me it would change my life. I explained that I did not need another book, that the Bible was all I needed. I am a christian and serve God in the Baptist Church. He too, was a Baptist at one time he said but now had read the other book that changed him over to a Mormon. He offered to do any yard work for us free and was very well dressed and mannerily. Very impressive and like the sermon said a real danger for the new graduate going out into the world. I, for one, agreed with this sermon.

Michael Hranek, your posts have always been authentic. You pretty much say what you truly feel is the right thing to say and you don't worry about the way others respond to the comment. Sometimes I hesitate to make comments because of riducule or anger by others and that's not being authentic. Maybe it's something that God wants me to say but out of fear of offending someone I won't say it. Some people in my life have hurt me deeply and I have moved away from them out of distrust. Sometimes, the apology if offered starts off, if I have done anything wrong..no sense of wrong done is ever mentioned. So the relationship cannot be mended until both are truly authentic with one another It only takes one to forgive but it takes two to have a relationship. Take care and God be with you as you travel the roads. As my son says, God has His hand on his truck guiding it just as he used to guide his Tonka trucks with his hand as a little boy.
