The Decline of Evangelical America

IT hasn’t been a good year for evangelicals. I should know. I’m one of them.

In 2012 we witnessed a collapse in American evangelicalism. The old religious right largely failed to affect the Republican primaries, much less the presidential election. Last month, Americans voted in favor of same-sex marriage in four states, while Florida voters rejected an amendment to restrict abortion.

Much has been said about conservative Christians and their need to retool politically. But that is a smaller story, riding on the back of a larger reality: Evangelicalism as we knew it in the 20th century is disintegrating. ...

Blame Jerry Falwell and those like him and his "moral majority" (circa 1980). Don't broad brush republicans just because a few of them got distracted.

Even before Falwell got "political" I was a lib democrat in the 1970s who loved Jimmy Carter because he was considered to be "evangelical Christian" by myself and so many at the time.

I've already noticed that too many Evangelicals are evangelical Republicans first, perhaps Christians as an after-thought. They seem to have forgotten The Truth Behind The Church's Purpose They have very confused ideas of How the Church Relates to the Kingdom.

The decline of Evangelical America can be directly related to how many got involved in politics--oh, and listening to the likes of Rick Warren and Olsteen haven't helped either.

Ah, John U.K., you might want to look over this PDF which includes some insights on Dr. Schaffer, The Far Left and the Far Right.

I thought that the author did not define the success of the American church very well. Our success or power is not determined by our political prowess but by how much we depend on God's Spirit to live daily. I also don't think that the churches and people he used as a presence for "evangelicalism" (ie, Rick Warren, Tim Keller) were good examples. I agree that the American church is in decline, but not for the reasons he said in the article. Sure, Christians have made mistakes and have said things in a certain way that although true, were wrong because of their attitude or motive. But our error as Christians, imo, is that we haven't preached the Gospel *enough*, nor have lived it enough, because it hasn't overall meant enough to us. The population decline in the church is not due to our irrelevance but is due to the fact that the Bible said that people would fall away from the faith in latter times and want to hear things that itch their ears. But the spiritual decline of the church is due to both pastors' and professing Christians' hardening of hearts and their acceptance of false doctrine. Perhaps in a way, population decline may be good for us. The church in US has boasted of numerical success for so long, I long for the body of Christ to be a more cohesive body united by trut

You mean like the Protestant Reformation?

Sure, good advice.

Any Schaeffer available online?
