Call to Strip Citizenship of Those Who Sign Secession Petitions

Every day, thousands of citizens of all 50 states add their names to the petitions posted on the White House’s “We, the People” website calling for secession from the union.

The “We, the People” program includes a “create a petition” tab on the White House website. The explanation of the site claims that "if a petition gets enough support" — more than 25,000 signatures within 30 days — the "White House staff will review it, ensure it's sent to the appropriate policy experts, and issue an official response."

Not everyone thinks these people are simply exercising their right of expression, however. There are many — even some conservatives — who consider the act of calling for secession an act of treason.

"We here at RedState are American citizens. We have no plans to secede from the union,” wrote RedState founder Erick Erickson. “If you do, good luck with that, but this is not the place for ...

From the news item:
"Not everyone thinks these people are simply exercising their right of expression, however. There are many — even some conservatives — who consider the act of calling for secession an act of treason."

What a crock.

Treason in the US is what the Constitution says it is, and nothing else. Here it is for those who like to toss the word around:

Article 3, section 3, US Constitution:
"Treason against the United States shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies. No person shall be convicted of treason unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act, or on confession in open court."

Some things to notice-

1) Constitutionally, the United States is a "them," not an it.
2) Treason is an overt act of warfare or an overt act of adhering to the enemies of the United States, i.e. "their enemies" as quoted above.

Signing the petition as described doesn't remotely fit the description of treason.

Hey Stand Up - I am entitled to my own opinions and beliefs... Praise the Lord my pastor and husband don't try to stamp them out. May the good Lord bless them both - they are much better than I deserve. I suppose if I lose my citizenship, the good Lord will make a way for my husband and me... Perhaps we'll move to Texas!

Should those who sign petitions be stripped of their U.S. citizenship?

When they succeed and secede, yes.

Actually petitioning is an American right, Right to petition in the United States. So, no matter how moronic an idea is -- like the one to secede from the Union--should not get the response to strip people who have this idea stripped of their citizenship.

People who don't want to live in the United States, should do like groups such as some Mennonites or Mormons have and form their own communities in Latin America. (Wow, the Latinos would sure be in for a surprise when the red-neck neo-cons aren't all that peaceful!) Since it is American land all of these people have been benefiting from over the years, it should pass to their loyal American relatives or passed out by the State.

No, no problem anyone acting like the British Loyalists as in the Revolutionary War, perhaps we could raise funds for them for a free one-way trip to Canada or Latin America?

Might not be a terrible thing really. Your healthcare, education and taxation would likely go down considerably.

I too will not concern myself with the Red-State neocons. As the article alluded to, are the folks at Red-State favorable towards the secession of the colonies from the Crown? Should we all thus be charged with treason? The foundation of this country was based on the idea of "come out from among them and be ye separate". Why is it then so important for folks to compel others by the threat of force to stay united to something they can no longer honestly be party to.

I am opposed to abortion, euthanasia, state indoctrination centers (public schools), unprovoked invasions of foreign lands and a myriad of other things the federal gov't promotes. I no longer believe there to be an apparatus for changing this government while being united with it and I suspect many of my fellow Texians believe likewise. It seems to me, the honorable thing to do (and a path of avoiding God's wrath) would be to peaceably separate.

Why would a woman have to be stripped of her citizenship? Where is her husband? Where's her pastor?
