Christopher Hitchens dies at age 62

British-American writer Christopher Hitchens— the combative and caustic critic, intellectual, atheist and self-defined "conservative Marxist" — died Thursday at the age of 62 at a Texas hospital.

The cause of death was pneumonia, a complication of oesophageal cancer. He died Thursday night at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, surrounded by family and friends.

To those who urged Hitchens to embrace religion once he knew he was dying, he wrote:

"Suppose there were groups of secularists at hospitals who went round the terminally ill and urged them to adopt atheism: 'Don't be a mug all your life. Make your last days the best ones.' People might suppose this was in poor taste." ...

God does not need to work that way with the elect. He is not desperate.

Rom 9:21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?

Rom 11:7 What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded

I wouldn't want to bet on that, John Y., just as you might be betting on there is a purgatory, Purgatory: An Essential Roman Catholic Doctrine and Purgatory—A Grave Rejection of the Gospel, I think Mr. Hitchens was a man of his word, and died an atheist. Considering what the eternal, non-reversalable consequences of not submitting yourself to Christ, and only Christ--not Mary--one would hope he repented, but the odds of that are probably about the same as the odds of winning the lottery, or less.

There is a slight chance that Hitchens came to embrace and receive Jesus as his Personal Lord and Savior before passing away. Just as there is a chance that Old Lady O'Hair came to embrace and receive Jesus as her Personal Lord and Savior before she was murdered.

RIP? If he's right there's neither rest nor peace. Ditto if the Bible's right.
or in Mr. Hitchen's case,

Luke 16
24 "And he cried out and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue; for I am in agony in this flame.'---NASB

"I'm an unbeliever who believes in skepticism. I'm only sure about being unsure."

For a Christian to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, and his body being still united to Christ does rest in the grave until the resurrection. Sadly, it would appear that was not his portion. But now he is no longer an unbeliever, a skeptic or unsure. May the Lord be pleased to use his death to the increase of faith, to the living from whom he tried to remove it from.
