NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--A majority of Southern Baptist senior pastors and laity believe Christians should not drink alcohol and that using it could cause other believers to stumble, according to a new poll by LifeWay Research.
The survey asked Southern Baptist and non-Southern Baptist pastors and laity a series of seven questions about alcohol, ranging from their views on whether getting drunk is against Scripture to whether drinking alcohol is an example of Christian liberty.
Among Southern Baptists, 77 percent of senior pastors and 59 percent of laity believe "Christians should not use alcohol as a beverage." Those percentages fall, though, when Southern Baptists are asked whether "Scripture indicates that people should never drink" alcohol. Forty-one percent of SBC pastors agreed with that statement, while 34 percent of Southern Baptist laity did....

AA is Antichristian. I would not advise anyone to join AA. What they need is salvation--being filled with the Holy Ghost.
Further to what you said, I think alcohol can be deadly for those who may be addicted but don't know it. Many drinkers probably don't think they are addicted until their personal life is harmed and they try to quit.
Also a person's personal circumstances may change in a way which causes them to drink to try to find comfort. This will lead nowhere but to greater harm to themselves and those around them. The easiest way to stay out of trouble with liquor is to never start or avoid it altogether.

I tend to agree with Fellow Saint, even though I don't want to sit in judgment over my fellow "wet" Presbyterians or Jeaporsize my home state's wine industry (California)
My best friend died from alcoholism, 20 years after being encouraged to enjoy/imbibe such spirits by his college buddies. I miss him VERY much, and--had I known his weakness--would NEVER have drunk with him in the first place.
It's a tough call and requires much wisdom, but alcohol consumption must NEVER be taken lightly. This stuff can KILL you if you're not careful.

I agree. I've been there and done it. Drank and stumbled. It also confuses mental functions and I need a clear brain for my work. Alcohol is a no-no. It is not to be found in my home.
