Mega-churches closing for Christmas
Willow Creek Community Church, one of the largest churches in the Chicago area, will be closed on Sunday, Dec. 25--because it's Christmas.

Although thousands of the faithful usually flock to the South Barrington church and its satellites on Sundays, Willow Creek is joining several other evangelical megachurches across the nation in choosing not to worship as a congregation on Christmas Day.

Instead, they will urge members to focus on family at home, rather than filling the pews.

"At first glance it does sound contrarian," said Rev. Gene Appel, senior pastor of Willow Creek. "We don't see it as not having church on Christmas. We see it as decentralizing the church on Christmas--hundreds of thousands of experiences going on around Christmas trees. The best way to honor the birth of Jesus is for families to have a more personal experience on that day." ...

"We don't see it as not having church on Christmas. We see it as decentralizing the church on Christmas--hundreds of thousands of experiences going on around Christmas trees."

Sunday is the Lord's Day. God's people belong in church worshipping, not gathered around the modern day secular idol of a Christmas tree.

I am dumbfounded that a supposed "pastor" is encouraging people to stay home on the Lord's Day for "family time." Of course, the way the megachurches segregate every family in to different age groups, this may be one of the few times they are together on the Sabbath.

" is a
GREAT opportunity to find a
REAL christian church to attend."

Where I'm sitting, they're getting harder and harder to find. I'm so grateful to have found my church. It's very very small but the preaching is solid and the music is still pure. Nothing liberal about it and I'm thankful for the handful of people who attend, not to mention the minister, who loves the Lord.

I know there are people out there who don't live anywhere near good churches. Thank God for the internet, where you can download good sermons and meet other Bible believing Christians, albeit sometimes you have to endure the tares with the wheat. There's nothing wrong with worshipping God in your home. Church isn't a building, it's the body of Believers.

right you are:
The church is the Body of Christ.

Which is why when a [Mega-church]
closes, as Jim says, it is a
GREAT opportunity to find a
REAL christian church to attend.

Reminds me of Congress: whenever they're not in session, the crime rate goes down significantly....

I suppose we should clarify what the word church really means here.

My definition may be different then some.

But last summer one of the children pulled the fire alarm during service, and that of course meant the pastor and the rest of us all went outside so we could hear the rest of the sermon.

As we waited for the fire trucks to arive (which is automatic even if accidental) I pondered that very question of what does the word church mean.

When we all left the building, it was the church that went outside, and it was the building we left behind.

My definition of the word church is the body of believers, or better said the Body of Christ.

closed for Christmas ? just like businesses so this way they admit they are a business and not a church. Maybe this will give people an opportunity to see that WC is not a real church but a business so hopefully they will seek the Lord & go to another church.

What an excellent opportunity for Willow Creek congregation to look around at other churches, and see if they can find a Christian one! It would be an excellent suggestion that the congregation stay away from that Church as much as possible.

Engineer, one of the first things that Church did was to shut out God.

"The best way to honor the birth of Jesus is for families to have a more personal experience on that day." Is this guy serious? Can't the same thing be said about Sundays?

Engineer, I think your last one... Mega-churches closing for God, is and has been happening for some time.

In this world there are many gods, new cars, new homes, trophies, merit badges, MONEY, power, sports, fame etc.

But there is only one true God! And most churches today have no clue of how or where to find him.
