Christians Responsible for Most 'Hateful Internet Speech,' Says Washington Post Religion Reporter

An editor for The Washington Post's religion section claimed that Christians were behind the majority of nasty and vile feedback she had received throughout her career in an op-ed Thursday.

Sally Quinn, the moderator of the religion website On Faith, which spun off from The Washington Post last year, described the earliest "hate emails" she had "did not just attack what I wrote ... but were also vicious ad hominem attacks."

"I can't tell you how many people wrote in to say that I was a whore and a slut and so much worse that I can't even write it here. And these all came from Christians," wrote Quinn. "I was going to hell. I had made a pact with the devil. Jesus and God hated me. One man wrote that he hoped I would get in a car accident, that the gas tank would explode and I would be burned alive. He was a God-fearing Christian, and he ascertained that I obviously was not one." ...

Sorry to hear of your bad experiences as a new believer. If it be of any consolation to you, I too am an ex romanist, saved by the wonderful mercy and grace of GOD, who has not found to many Christians who love the Lord and their neighbor as themselves.
They mainly love being Pharisees and their church activities.

I am so glad you know so much about "HATEFUL TACTICS"

Do you mean things like blasting a man because he dares point out a false Christian (as in Mormon) like Glenn Beck and how those professing to be Christian ought not invite such a man in to speak in their assembly if they are seeking to be faithful to Christ?

Hmmm? Let me ask you did Jesus ever call those who condemned others while they were actually doing the very thing they accused others of doing (sinning) something like...hypocrites?

I've seen and heard Christians speak like this everywhere I've been. Not most,, but some are so hardcore and rude that I'm always left wondering how they can sit in judgement when they sound even worse at times. Not to mention, how many say to themselves, "well, if this is Christianity...no thanks".

Sad to say that many who post on SA are believers and good people but have yet to really learn to season their speech with salt nor speak the truth in love. Its the natural (carnal) outcome of the Corinthians having a party spirit in preferring certain Christian personalities over others thus differing and arguing over differences and nuances in certain doctrines. Instead of coming together as brethren and hashing these nuances out they instead (as the 1st poster LJ puts it) "bite and devour one another." If my "truth" don't exactly match your "truth" then we should discuss the matter civilly as between family members and let the Word of God have the final say, or if it is a matter of only opinion and personal preferences and not Word then respect the others opinion. Paul admonishes Timothy to correct with gentleness those who are in error. We often try to correct each other with a sledgehammer instead.

The reality is we are all still sinners, saved by grace alone. Which demands that we live gracious lives. Seeking the good of our neighbour in speech and deed. Yet we all fall short in this respect. sometimes even speaking the truth in love comes across as hatful, even believers because of remaining sin react sinfully to such rebukes. This sadly does come out on these pages to often. what is called for then among ourselves is repentance. Seeking grace to speak the truth in love and not sinful pride or hatred of our neighbour.

I'm sure some Christians may have stepped out of line and used inappropriate language. However, there are no guarantees that all those people who posted vulgar stuff were Christian or that this lady is Christian herself. I don't know her. A lot of times when Christians speak out and show what God says about murder, homosexuality, adultery, fornication, etc., it is called hate speach. Even though it is not. I doubt this article was intended as a letter if correction for the church, but rather a way to put down the church. Amazing how many times the media puts down Christians while ignoring how hateful Muslims are doing far worst than name calling.
