Pope Benedict XVI is to resign at the end of this month after nearly eight years as the head of the Catholic Church, saying he is too old to continue at the age of 85.
The unexpected development - the first papal resignation in nearly 600 years - surprised governments, Vatican-watchers and even his closest aides.
The then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger became Pope after John Paul II's death.
The Vatican says it expects a new Pope to be elected before Easter.

Personally, I've believed for a long time that a pope will be the beast, but I'm not 100% on anything. I've read through many of the theories and there are many interesting ones, for sure. This is a very interesting topic for me but I think predictions can also be dangerous to the weak and unlearned.

I was always curious to know what they had up their sleeves when they elected him in the first place. I was curious because they had to know that it wouldn't be long before a replacement was needed.

At the turn of the 20th century we were better prepared for the invasion of the papists but now.....an American pope - I hope not! That would surly pave out the rest of the roads to Rome.
