The Reformation and Calvinism vs. Arminianism

By the opening years of the seventeenth century, the Reformation had turned European Christianity into a conglomeration of conflicting sects. The Roman Catholic Council of Trent drew a firm line between Catholics and Protestants by declaring that Roman Catholic tradition represents the final authority when it comes to interpreting the Bible.

In 1618, a war between Protestants and Catholics broke out when some Protestants tossed two Catholic ambassadors out a second-story window. Fortunately, the ambassadors survived. Unfortunately, they survived because they landed in a heap of horse manure. Historians have named this foul-smelling event the “Defenestration of Prague,” which proves once and for all that historians have no sense of humor when it comes to naming events.

The Defenestration of Prague—or, as I prefer to call it, “The Great Stinky Second-Story Window Tossing”—was how the Thirty Years’ ...

Hmmhi...Abraham was in paradise. Unrighteous people don't go to heaven. Once Jesus died, Abraham was then reconciled to God by the righteousness of Christ and went to heaven.

Thanks for the note about the over 41,000 sects or denominations in existence today.
I've heard the USA was the home of most of them since there is no respect for Tradition.

Since everyone interprets the Bible (of course, only the King James Version)in their own way, we have reached the level that the Old Testament talked about in Judges, when men lived as they pleased.
And, I think most churches do not teach the distinctives of their own doctrines because they don't want to scare away visitors.

So most people who go from one denomination to another could not tell what makes them different besides their music style. And then there are the TV ministers and the websites to add more voices out there.
Bottom line: I doubt many people are interested in what this blog is raising as an issue.

To say an act is not meritorious for something doesn't mean it was an act of someone else. If it isn't meritorious, that means it wasn't of any affect.

Precisely, faith is NOT meritorious. And that explains where the faith came from, and it wasn't in the man.

Abraham was in purgatory?

So you were not "effectually called" then. You were confronted with certain claims, and you "chose" to believe them, even though you "could" have rejected them. So "your" salvation is totally dependent upon YOU, seeing as God has done all that he can.

No wonder you are unable to give God ALL the glory for your salvation. That is very sad, because it is not the biblical manner.

I hope to make you think a little, John.

No John, I'm asking about YOUR experience. Can you honestly say that when you believed on Christ you could have done otherwise?

Yes, it is biblical to believe people reject God even having known the truth. You seem to assume if only the unbeliever would realise hell is real that they would automatically believe.
No, the question was: "Are you saying that when you heard the gospel you had the capacity to reject the free offer of the gospel, having come to believe in the existence of hell and that forever, because of your wickednesses?"

Is that your experience?

Are you saying that when you heard the gospel you had the capacity to reject the free offer of the gospel, having come to believe in the existence of hell and that forever, because of your wickednesses? You really believe that?

p.s. Maybe you'd like to edit your earlier post as it is stretching the page unnecessarily.

God obviously saves those who believe. No unbeliever is ever saved. You first believed, than you were washed with the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit.

One of the funnier lines in this blog is when the author says people do resist the Holy Spirit up to the moment God regenerates them. If they resist Him, Heisn't going to save them! They must first believe.
Au contraire John. In my case I resisted God until he quickened and enlightened me, bringing me to fear him and judgment, realising I was a grievous sinner, knowing myself lost and undone without a Saviour, and showing me his great love for the ungodly in dying in my place, for my sins, taking judgment on my behalf, bearing all my sins in his body on the tree, bringing me to faith in such a substitute, and causing me to repent because of a new nature within me which hated sin now and loved righteousness. And now you see I can truthfully say......

To God be all praise and glory.

Mike of N.Y., it's good that, once-in-while we can agree on something, You're of course correct in pointing out, the answer is No! to Is the One True Church Roman Catholic?. The List of Heresies and Human Traditions Adopted and Perpetuated by the Roman Catholic Church in the Course of 1600 Years is a very long one, a tragedy of errors. Martin Luther only pointed out a few of them on Oct. 31, 1517.

Arminius, to Calvin, to Paul by Miles Stanford has many good points to it. Of course the Romish Church is Arminian in thought and practice, but Mr. Sanford doesn't appear to be in the camp of Amyraldism (Four point Calvinism)--which he should have been.
