The Bible Supports Abortion, Liberal Christian Group Claims
Some progressive Christians have recently endorsed a controversial interpretation of a biblically-backed idea that involves abortion and the actual moment that life begins.

The liberal Christian blog The Christian Left recently claimed that the Bible did not forbid abortion and that God even stated when life actually began. Their claims, though, are brewing a growing controversy with the larger Christian community, who believes the progressive religious group is twisting passages of the Bible to support abortion.

The first passage that is used in this manner is taken from Genesis 2:7 – God "breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and it was then that the man became a living being." ...

I appreciated reading the below comments, especially Russ' thoughts about how abortion affects women should not be the issue. That would be like saying we should discuss how murder affects the murderer? We can call it what we want, but abortion is the intentional killing of an innocent life – murder.

[41] And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: (Luke 1:41)

[4] Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, [5] Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, [and] I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. (Jeremiah 1:4-5)

[16] Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all [my members] were written, [which] in continuance were fashioned, when [as yet there was] none of them. (Psalms 139:16)

[3] Lo, children [are] an heritage of the LORD: [and] the fruit of the womb [is his] reward. (Psalms 127:3)

[13] Thou shalt not kill. (Exodus 20:13)

"Conservative Calvinist publishers are producing books not only against [abortifacient and other forms of] contraception but promoting Natural Family Planning. A movement of Missouri Synod Lutherans is working to overturn their church’s current teaching and return it to Luther’s, and observers report a new interest in the traditional teaching among conservative movements in the mainline churches."

I agree, formerly Russ, and that's the only way I've ever looked at it. I know it's easy for men, not being the woman to say, but like you said, the issue extends far beyond who a woman's body belongs to, the position she placed herself in, or that she, very horrifcly, was impregnated via rape, but rather, the issue is the murder of a child that God himself breathed life into.

I'm with you. Liberal Christian, progressive Christian, Catholic Christian– these are just oxymorons, impossibilities.

I take exception with one aspect of the article though. At one point they attempt to talk about the affects of abortion on the mother. To me, this is a wrong approach. It doesn't matter what happens to the mother for good or bad. The issue at stake is whether or not it is right to murder a child, period. To focus on anything other than the taking of an innocent life is to concede ground to the abortion lovers who have been successful in turning this issue into a question of telling women what they can do with their own bodies.
Lets keep the focus on the baby and let's keep the pressure on because right now we have the initiative in the fight and we are winning!

"WHEREAS, Christians in the American society today are faced with difficult decisions about abortion; and
WHEREAS, Some advocate that there be no abortion legislation, thus making the decision a purely private matter between a woman and her doctor; and
WHEREAS, Others advocate no legal abortion, or would permit abortion only if the life of the mother is threatened;
Therefore, be it RESOLVED, that this Convention express the belief that society has a responsibility to affirm through the laws of the state a high view of the sanctity of human life, including fetal life, in order to protect those who cannot protect themselves; and
Be it further RESOLVED, That we call upon Southern Baptists to work for legislation that will allow the possibility of abortion under such conditions as rape, incest, clear evidence of severe fetal deformity, and carefully ascertained evidence of the likelihood of damage to the emotional, mental, and physical health of the mother."
