U.S. quake aid arrives in India

U.S. Air Force cargo jets, massive enough to carry more cargo than two 747s and packed with supplies, arrived Saturday in the midst of the nightmarish aftermath of Indiaâ€™s earthquake. As relief workers raced to distribute food, medicine and supplies among hundreds of thousands of survivors, officials defended their handling of efforts to help quake victims.

IN WHAT U.S. officials described as an â€œair bridge,â€ two C-5s - the largest planes the Air Force has - flew aid from Travis Air Force Base in California and Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to Guam. In Guam, the supplies were transferred to smaller planes, because the Ahmedabad airport was too small for C-5s.

The first of the smaller planes, a C-141 carrying personnel, touched down just before 8 a.m. Saturday in Ahmedabad, the largest city in quake-hit Gujarat state. A bottleneck in the relief effort has been a lack of people to unload ...
