Muslim voters oust Jakarta’s Christian governor

The Christian governor of the capital in this mostly Muslim country lost a runoff election Wednesday that was filled with religious and ethnic tensions.

Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, who is of Chinese heritage, trailed former education minister Anies Baswedan by at least 10 percentage points, with more than 80% of the ballots counted.

Purnama, known by his nickname Ahok, faces a blasphemy charge for insulting the Quran. In recent months, hardline Muslim groups took to the streets and social media to advise against voting against a non-Muslim.

Baswedan, who is Muslim, will take over as governor in October. ...

Chris, you made some interesting comments. Of course that holds true for any government that is under the thumb of a fanatical fanatical religion. Catholic governments often leave something to be desired. "Rome when in minority is as gentle as a lamb, when in equality is as clever as a fox, and when in the majority is as fierce as a tiger.". This result should make Indonesia neighbor such as Australia uneasy. All they need is some fanatical Muslim State on their border. That is the realities of sharia law. This former Christian governor is now in a very dangerous position as the Muslim fanatics want nothing less than his death sentence, or at least life imprisonment.

In many Islamic countries, a non-Muslim may not be a boss over a Muslim, a non-Muslim may not be an officer in the military, but only a private or ordinary soldier, sailor or airman, (especially hard in a country which has compulsory military conscription), and a Muslim can renege his contract that he has with a non-Muslim businessman, but if the reverse happens, the non-Muslim will feel the full weight of civil, and probably more likely criminal law.

In some Islamic countries, a Muslim will not be treated by a non-Muslim doctor, or taught by a non-Muslim teacher, and non-Muslims, Christians particularly, are banned from a whole list of professions.

The whole reason that Asya Bibi Masih, (I think I got her name right), is languishing on death row on Pakistan, on a false charge of "blasphemy against the prophet Muhammed", was because the other women in the field, Muslims all, refused to drink from the cup of water that she brought as she is a Christian.
