Antarctic sea ice: Record coverage

Sea ice levels are at record highs near the South Pole and have made it increasingly hard for Antarctic ships to deliver supplies. Helicopters have become a more reliable delivery mode at Australia's Mawson base when ships are not able to break through the thick sea ice. Australian Antarctic Division operations manager Robb Clifton said more sea ice means more expensive delivery costs. "We might use a third of the amount of fuel that we are delivering to actually power the aircraft to deliver that fuel," he said. ... |
