God Doesn't Want Matt Chandler to be Your Pastor
These days, you can pop in your ear buds and instantly listen to some of the best preachers out there. If you want some passionate preaching, you dip into Chandler or Piper. If you want loads of grace you listen to Tullian Tchividjian. If you want a Scottish accent mixed with beautiful Biblical exegesis, you listen to Alistair Begg. If you’re feeling really wild and crazy, you listen to old Mark Driscoll sermons. I’m a big fan of podcasts, and I’m grateful for the glut of wonderful resources available to me.

But the massive availability of fantastic preaching presents a problem as well. It can tempt us to be discontent with our own pastors. We can think, If only my pastor could preach like Matt Chandler. If only my pastor was as grace-centered as Tullian. If only my pastor could bring the Bible heat like John Piper. We wish that our pastors were as gifted as another pastor.

But God doesn’t want ...

One might think from the last series of messages there might be something wrong with Matt Chandler, hmm, ¶ http://tinyurl.com/j5cxc8t ¶ Mark Driscoll and Tullian Tchividjian -- that's a whole different ball game, perhaps There were (are?) serious issues around the ministries of these men, and look at the comments on this thread, and the threads directly related to these men.

One thing very wrong with the article is that it doesn't take expositional preaching into account. This what makes the sermon of John MacArthur so good, q.v., Expository Preaching in a Postmodern World, Part 1, and Expository Preaching in a Postmodern World, Part 2

Why I Am Committed to Expository Preaching, Part 1 and Why I Am Committed to Expository Preaching, Part 2 They are designed to help the individual Christian grow, no matter where he is! In fact local pastors use John's assorted materials to help them out.

Support your local church! There's a lot of good free material out their on the web-use it!

Jim Licoln, while I don't disagree wholly with your comments, especially about bad preachers. If a church is genuinely unhappy with their pastor, remember that he was elected by them, and that preachers always need bathing in prayer, lifting up to God, that he may be an effective leader, pastor, shepherd, brother, and preacher. Without that, any pastor is weaker than he should be. Asked why he was so effective, Spurgeon replied. "Because my people pray for me." As a pastor should have his flock in mind, so his flock should uphold him in prayer.
AJ, looking for something else I saw your comment, that I didn't answer. Many IFB's are not congregational. For example IHCC, q.v., Ten Rules to Revival or Ruination? -- “How to Develop a Cult Mentality in Your Congregation”, Many pastors are only voted on once, if at all, and that person ends upo being their for life. Who Should Run the Church? A Case for the Plurality of Elders. IFB's usually have a difficult time getting rid of bad pastors/elders. Good Christians have to leave that church for another--not the pastor

it's a strange way that search engines work. I was looking around for a thread to refer A article of Dr. Rugh's to, instead I find this want to attach a John MacArthur's URL to! to these pastors are more properly address them as Mr. now, because of their actions that got them terminated such as Mark Driscoll, and also Tullian Tchividjian. Dr. MacArthur's article is, Should Fallen Pastors Be Restored?. Dr MacArthur gave an emphatic no! to this idea. I would expect Mr. Tullian Tchividjian would agree with John's assessment. so I can think of two pastors here , well should be former pastors you wouldn't want to be your pastor at your church - - but not for the reasons given in the article.

I was part of church that was so dead...stayed for about 10 years...nothing changed...It was from the Sermon Audio that I found a real Bible centered church with a blessing Christ centered pastor. I used to starve for good teaching... Now I'am happy and have green pasture and fresh water every Lords Day! Stil use Sermon Audio and advice for those who are hungry...I just can't get enough... I was starving for so long...
I listen and learnet a lot from John Piper, Paul Washer, Cozart...but my pastor is my favorite. Stephen Holland! Bless you all!

UPS, I have no problem with agreeing with that, I have often pointed out, What to Look for in a Church I have on occasion pointed out to some our Romish visitors who remain in the Romish Church "Because I Like It" is not a good enough reason to stay in that organization and in fact pointed out also, Why Should I Become an Active Member of a Church? I know you have pointed this out to that same person also.

I did see Mr. Driscoll name pop up where it shouldn't have. In fact when you go to the search bar at the very top of SA newspage and type in "Driscoll" you'll find numerous threads about them which are often unflattering or contain pointed remarks about him -- like this thread did.

just a fyi, it was Mike from Florida, and you can still agree with the authors (and Mike's) point (like Wayfaring Pilgrim did)even if you don't agree with his choice of speakers.

...a very true statement,Jack F "...Problem is Steve that many churches are going Liberal, Arminian or Roman Catholic which leaves real Christians without a true Biblical church to attend. Some cities and towns are approaching apostate churches only status."
I have experienced this myself even with a church that I had attended for 14 years. They may have meant well but they were highly influenced by the likes of Warren,Myer,Graham,Osteen,Hinn, etc. They were unlearned in regards to topics like the Roman Catholic church and they had no desire to be otherwise.Other local churches are more interested in numbers than in rightly dividing the Word, regarding entertainment as the most important variable.
And,like Denise,I have benefited much from MacArthur,Youssef, and many others here on SA...I apologize for not naming each one. I'm sure that I would forget a few if I did. They are very much appreciated and I think that God was very purposeful in having these sound preachers be just where they are. I think that their reward in heaven will be great.I also have benefited greatly from exchanges with many of you who post here on the SA news site. In an unexpected and odd way, there is a kind of fellowship.

Or Jack F.,

In the following two sermons Dr. Rugh used a book by a Reformed theologian to compare Dispensational and Covenantal hermeneutics
The Covenants of Scripture, part 1 and The Covenants of Scripture, part 2 The following two PDF files especially the chart will be quite helpful in following the above sermons, Dispensationalists: Covenants and Dispensations Part I by Thomas Ice (PDF) (Short) and Summary of Dispensations and Covenants (PDF) (This is quite good). Oh, and a short sermon on, A Short History Of Dispensationalism.

But you can always listen to good sermons here on SA, like those mentioned above. One would hope, the writer isn't suggesting a pastor is a substitute for "Dear Abby," or Ann Landers? Personal help? See The Transformed Life in Action

Denise it is a blessing you found good preaching online. I think you are missing the point the writer was making.

From the article

"I’m a big fan of podcasts, and I’m grateful for the glut of wonderful resources available to me

But God doesn’t want Matt Chandler to be your pastor (unless you happen to be in his church). God has placed your pastor in your church to care specifically for you. When your pastor is preparing his sermon, he’s preparing it for you, and God is specifically empowering him to prepare a sermon for you.

Your pastor is better than your podcast."

I don't believe he was speaking against listening to sermons from other preachers. That would be a strange article to put up on this website

Hebrews 13:17

Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

see Acts 20:28

I don't agree with this article. It almost seemed "anti-intellectual anti-berean". Dr. MacArthur's ministry has helped our family, TWICE, out of bad churches. We didn't know what a good preacher was until we started listening to Dr. MacArthur exegete the scriptures fully! Then we were able to follow the roots of his ministry and many others, back to the Reformation! Then we found a faithful church, listening online to the sermons before we actually attended the services. As for the all the faithful ministers of the gospel? In a city/metropolitan area of approximately 250,0000 people, we know of 3 ministers faithfully teaching the full counsel of God. We wandered around the evangelical wasteland, for years, without even hearing about the means of grace! So, my little rant is, Good Pastors and men who are guarding the pulpit are difficult to find, and I am thankful for the resources available to the sheep. WE love and appreciate our pastors, but we do utilize the giftedness of other well known pastors and ministries, given to the body of Christ for our edification. God Bless everyone.

The point of the article was that your pastor preaches to the people of his church of which God has made him an undersheperd. His is saying that there is more to being a pastor than preaching and teaching.

Jim you need to update your software on your tablet because the author did mention MacArthur two lines above the last sentence of the article.

thank you Jim for your commentary of which I agree. David E Thompson is my favorite exegetical preacher and I have probably listened to all of his books. Isaiah at least 3 times!
