Minnesota Church Must Pay PCUSA Over $1.2 Million to Leave Denomination

Hope Presbyterian Church of Minneapolis voted to leave Presbyterian Church (USA) and was dismissed back in May. The financial settlement for leaving was reached in late June.

The agreement was made between Hope Presbyterian and the PCUSA regional body it once belonged to, the Presbytery of the Twin Cities Area.

In return for being allowed to leave, Hope Presbyterian must pay the presbytery the sum of $1.2 million and lose one of its campuses, named the Oliver Christian Ministry Center.

it is only about money. Probably the main advantage of being a preacher in a denomination is the retirement plan. The United Methodist Church had the all the local churches put the title of the building into the denomination's name. It should be somebody expected considering many of these local churches got financial aid from the mother church anyway. So all I have to say is tough. . if a person happens to be a Christian in one of these denominations, he should realize this.he should be making his exit plans sooner rather than later.

There had to be a financial settlement, and it would be huge!
This sends a clear message to any other local group that considers leaving the denomination.
Of course, without looking at the details, you can't say if this is a huge penalty or a big discount on the real estate involved.
It would be interesting to go back to the similar situation in California that was reported in SA last year (or before), to see how that local group is doing to pay back the millions they had to pay.
What could happen?
This group could decide to sell the bldg to a Muslim/Mormon/Jehovah's Witnesses group for more money, and relocate to another location.
Any price is a small one to flee the Babylon that the PCUSA has become
