To become a ‘perfect dunghill,’ embrace Calvinism?

The late historian William Estep wrote in the Texas Baptist Standard that if the Southern Baptist Convention went Calvinist on evangelism, it would become a “perfect dunghill.” Strong words, but many would agree. Not Baptist scholars Michael A.G. Haykin and C. Jeffrey Robinson Sr., though.

In To the Ends of the Earth: Calvin’s Missional Vision and Legacy (Crossway, 2014) Haykin and Robinson turn standard understanding upside down and say John Calvin and other Reformers were strongly mission-oriented. Dubious? ...

The real subject of discussion in the church today, is not so much are you calvanist or arminian, but are you spirit filled a reflection of Jesus Christ to the world. Acts-6:3-4

Understandable point of view

Mans fallen nature despises the truth, because its the smell of death for them. But to us that are saved, the precious truths so well documented in the Reformed Church are the power of GOD

Did John Calvin "think" only of the doctrines of men? Or did he read the Bible?

Then of course we could ask did the Holy Spirit guide Calvin?
John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth ....

Gets complicated doesn't it?

Calvinism is not the brain child of John Calvin. He merely wrote an apologetic work (Instititutes) which is strictly biblical interpretation. People get hung uo on NAMES rather than doctrine, or they have an aversion to the Sovereignty of God of man's supposed free will. What is called Calvinism is really Augustianism which Pauline which is Biblical truth.

when Jesus preached where was calvin's name and theology?

you mean to tell me this calvinism was not preached by Jesus, you mean it is new and has divided the brethren ...

you are sticking to your pet sins by way of calvinism, calvinism is mans vanity disguised as holiness that you apply to the skin like sunblock... your "sunblock" or Son Block, will not prevent Gods Holy Fire from burning you .....

Arsy Varsy, Free Masons are more likely to join mainline churches be they Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian, though the last one the Presbyterian pastor that I saw officiating at a Masonic was uncomfortable with the Free Mason funeral (and of course rightfully so, but that didn't stop the funeral being held in his church.)

You mean we're suppose to remember the difference between particular and general Baptists? I would expect that you should get a copy of The Anabaptist Story -- William Estep from somewhere Of course there's some argument how just what type of influence the Anabaptists had on the English Baptists, but read the book.

No, I guarantee you Indian Hills Community Church, we have too much respect for God's Word to be using the KJV

1 Corinthians 14:9
So also you, unless you utter by the tongue speech that is clear, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air.
1 Corintians 14:11 If then I do not know the meaning of the language, I shall be to the one who speaks a barbarian, and the one who speaks will be a barbarian to me. ---NASB

First, this discussion needs to be seen as being limited to a very small percentage of people attending churches these days.
Think of this: many Baptist churches have changed their names and no longer have Baptist in them; they are called "Christ Journey," "Christ Fellowship," or something similar.
To me this means they are no longer teaching the historical beliefs that Baptists have held to. Not that they are any different from other churches---I believe 90 percent of the people sitting in pews every Sunday could not explain to a visitor what the distinct beliefs are of their group, besides a few basic ones--We only use the KJV, We don't baptise infants (we 'dedicate them to the Lord'), we do full immersion baptism, etc.

I did think it was unusual for Baptists to believe at all in Calvinism since the latter group rejected any secret fellowships like the Freemasonry, while Baptists have left their members free to join and continue belonging to them. In simple terms, it meant, if you were a Freemason, you would join the First Baptist Church of Anytown, USA, not the First Presbyterian Church.
Not that it would make much difference in your daily life, since the distinct and historical teachings of each group are not being taught in either place.

The Elect know that Calvinism is the Gospel.

The alternative to Calvinism known as Arminianism is found in Roman Catholic idolatry, Jehovah's Witness theory and other human unbiblical cults.

The predecessor to Liberalism in denominations such as the Anglican/Episcopalian fallacy is Arminian hypothesis.

The Arminian premise is based upon anti-sovereignty of God, an impotent view of sin, an ineffectual definition of predestination, a human image god of weaker attributes and the belief that sinners can contribute to salvation.

The solution to this is Biblical Calvinism which by grace has only been received by a remnant.

I'm not a Calvinist but this is quite strong.

1 cor 1

12Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.
13Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?
14I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;
15Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.
16And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.
17For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

Interesting you use the same horrible slanderous man Bolsec-to make your point and I guess your hatred of Calvin comes from poor internet research.

Sin is the sole cause of anyone’s damnation and that is what Calvin believed.
Examining Romans 9 would be the best place to see what Calvin says:

Double Predestination?
here

Calvin spoke of the reprobate in regards to predestination, but it was always a predestination based on, and within the context of an act of justice. In short, he never meant in the context that it is often used today... Calvin didn’t teach God chose all men from a neutral place, some for Glory, and some for hell.

‘Calvin, however, is certain that we freely choose sin. This makes man responsible for committing sin and for his own damnation, and it makes God responsible for all that is good, and the salvation of the elect.’

Most excellent article, bro. Thanks for posting that. It sure explains how it was that some particular Baptists fell away into hyperman category, and how Andrew Fuller was caught up in it until he chose to read scripture and get his understanding from that holy source.

I would love to know who the other nine baptists are.

The man who returned to the Roman Catholic fold
Dear "ONE EYED DECREEDISM"
(just edited my post to give you another moniker you can use)

If an imperfect man who horribly returned to the RCC could rightly be concerned with something wrong with Calvin's theology why can't you?

Go ahead and honestly reread Doctrines Lead to `Dunghill’ Prof Warns as (quoting the article) "Apparently Baptists always have had problems with an UNMODIFIED Calvinism. Only a few can be mentioned here.

The man who returned to the Roman Catholic fold and lied about Calvin? The man reconciled to the RC faith according to the Roman Catholic Encyclopaedia (even that doesn't support his obvious false statements about their bitter enemy Calvin the Protestant)!

8 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:

9 Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.

10 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:

11 Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.

12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.
