UPenn Professor: accreditation of religious schools a 'scandal'

University of Pennsylvania professor Peter Conn argues that religious schools should lose their accreditation because they ‚Äúsystematically undermine the most fundamental purposes of higher education.‚ÄĚ

Conn argues in his editorial, ‚ÄúThe Great Accreditation Farce,‚ÄĚ that the religious nature of these institutions contradicts the spirit of ‚Äúskeptical and unfettered inquiry.‚ÄĚ

If you can not present a superior education on a level playing field....then diss your competition! Secular schools are feeling the heat!

Conn contends that he has no ‚Äúparticular objection to like-minded adherents of one or another religion banding together, calling their association a college, and charging students for the privilege of having their religious beliefs affirmed.‚ÄĚ
So...he has a double standard? As SECULAR institutions are "like-minded adherents banding together, calling their association a college, and charging students to have their beliefs affirmed."

I thought the purpose of inquiry was to find answers. But if a person begins all inquiry with an an priori commitment to eternal skepticism, then he has rejected the very purpose of inquiry. Why go on a search for 'answers' to life's questions if you believe that final answers are unattainable? From whence arises this absolute certainty that certainty is forever impossible? What this man is basically saying is that the search for knowledge must begin with the certainty that knowledge and settled conviction are forever impossible to attain. How can this man know that to be true? Simple. He knows it to be true because it is his settled conviction that it is true and because "everybody knows" that you can't know anything. Makes a lot of sense, doesn't it?

I wonder how you can have the spirit of skeptical and unfettered inquiry when you are fettered by skepticism?

From the article:
the religious nature of these institutions contradicts the spirit of ‚Äúskeptical and unfettered inquiry.‚ÄĚ

People are going to interpret data according to their presuppositions. The humanist is no different. Whether taught science in light of scripture, or in light of evolution, you will interpret the data according to whichever you presuppose to be true. In my mind, the only way one would interpret data with unfettered inquiry is if they were never taught anything, and had no established premise to work with. Anways, humanistic institutions teach their theories like its established fact that shouldnt be questioned, so whats the difference?
