"In the interview, Pope Francis was quoted as saying that the 2% estimate came from advisers. It would represent around 8,000 priests out of a global number of about 414,000"
Any number they come up with is bogus, and just like a government attempting to minimalize a failing economy or unwarranted, unnecessary death, they use math to fool everyone into believing everything is just fine, not to worry, we got this. No group with an infection like this would ever venture to put real numbers out there, whatever they may be. Even at 2%, which I don't buy, the number is substantial, considering the vast number of priests on the planet. Relatively small, but 8000 priests hunting children is no small problem.
Note Dorcas and others, http://video.pbs.org/video/2365187642/ (Secrets of the Vatican (video)) When you have even a small percentage of a very large number--in this case the number of priests--you still have a large number of priests On top of this the Romish Church rarely defrocked these criminals, and just transferred them to other parishes to spread the misery around. The Papist Church, usually waited for the miscreant to be near death or dead before it did anything. This magnified the problem, even with a low (?) percentage of sexually diviant priests.
