Peter Greste trial: Al Jazeera journalist found guilty, sentenced to seven years in jail

Greste and his colleagues are among a group of 20 journalists charged by the Egyptian government in a case that has triggered international outrage about press freedom in Egypt.

Of that group, 16 are Egyptians accused with joining the Brotherhood, which was designated a terrorist organisation in the wake of the army ousting elected president Mohamed Morsi last July.

Prosecutors said the relationship between Al Jazeera and the Muslim Brotherhood was like an alliance with the devil, and that Greste's reportage was intended to harm the Egyptian state.

However, Greste told the judge that evidence against him had been falsified and asked for an acquittal. ...

""At no point during the long drawn out trial did the absurd allegations stand up to scrutiny."

The case makes Egypt's justice system look ridiculous. However Egypt doesn't care at present the place is in chaos politically and socially.

There are many who have pointed to the connection between Al Jazeera and Qatar and that Egypt sees Qatar as a threat because of association with the Muslim Brotherhood.

Thus the journalists have got caught up in a political morass. Justice is therefore not the concern of Egypt's judiciary and its politicians won't dare to get involved.

The factionalisation of Muslim countries prevents them from rational thinking about other groups and religious differences as Syria and Iraq demonstrate.

The only 'good' end result for the journalists could be brought about by sanctions and threats from outside Egypt.

The detailed story about Peter Greste that SA used is quite good and explains in considerable detail about the injustice of the Muslim Egyptian court. This is yet again an example of the Inadequacy of Islam what the American and Australian governments can do to resolve this injustice might be very little. But, the Western world has to fight not only for the freedom of religion in the Islamic world but also for freedom of the press, Muhammad’s critics and their deaths--Why the West must protect freedom of speech.
