John Piper: Watching Nudity on Shows Like 'Game of Thrones' Is ‘Recrucifying Christ’

On Friday's edition of the "Ask Pastor John" webcast, Pastor John Piper was asked, "Pastor John, do you believe there is a difference between film nudity versus pornography? I know many Christians who are against porn, but they have no issue watching movies or TV shows that show graphic nudity."

His sober response held no punches.

"The closer I get to death and meeting Jesus personally face to face, and giving an account for my life and for the careless words that I have spoken (Matthew 12:36—and how much more for intentional stares), the more sure I am of my resolve never intentionally to look at a television show or a movie or a website or a magazine where I know I will see photos or films of nudity," Piper responded.

"Never. That is my resolve. And the closer I get to death, the better I feel about that, and the more committed I become," he emphasized. ...

Christopher, I think that it is you who is doing the "assuming". When I stated that perhaps more information was needed, I was giving you the benefit of the doubt and was trying to concede that there could have been some missing information. And your example is not comparable.I only suggested that you ought not to read between the lines because you had clearly missed (no judgment on your comprehension level here)the gist of what was being said. You accused me of accusing you...and you were wrong in so doing.I really was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt.

SC, I don't need to read between any lines when a person leads off with an accusation. Nice attempt to try and twist it around back to me though. When a person feels that more information may be needed before any judgement is made on a particular topic, the wise choice would be to ask the pertinent questions, get the answer(s), and continue on from there; not make a smart comment, and then accuse me of having to read between the lines as if my comprehension abilities are non-existant. Yesterday, I was surprised at your comment. Today, I was expecting to read, "Sorry about that...I shouldn't have assumed." Instead, I get accused of reading into something that I can clearly see is there, but apparently, really isn't.
"Perhaps more information is needed" is ludicrous when followed by accusations instead of questions.
An example would be: I accuse someone of molesting a child. I tell their family, friends, post it on social media, and report it to law enforcement. After I complete the task of outing them, I say, "but I'm not certain of their guilt...Information is needed". Makes no sense, and the damage has been done. Extreme example, but get it?

Christopher000: I also wrote "Perhaps a little more information is needed?". Sometimes it's wise not to read between the lines.

I'm thinking it so I will say it,Sex is the miserable plague of mankind, and lust is the one sin that is inherent to a degree that its like breathing....does anyone know where the line between natural desire and lust realy is ?

I think that the fact there will be no Sex in heaven and that heaven will be a "perfect" place says a lot about what it realy is.

...and I can't help but wonder why someone, particularly a Christian, would sit in judgement using assumed information. I had a boss one time give me a piece of advice that has always stuck with me. He said, "before you ever assume or accuse anyone of anything, make sure you're right."

1)I never said I was watching a show on TV.

2) Say I did see it on a TV show. Couldn't I have been speaking to my wife as she was watching the show in question and I just happened to catch a particular scene?

3) Could what I related be a real life situation that I saw in real time at someones home, heard from a friend, or been told by my wife after she arrived home from visiting friends?

I believe that John Piper has misapplied Hebrews 6:6, i.e. the reference to "crucifying once again the Son of God" to the sin of lust. The reference in Hebrews 6:6 is in connection with deliberately falling away from the faith in which case there remains no other means of atonement for sin. Without condoning lust or flaunted nudity which may cause many people to stumble, I do not believe that when a person does sin in a moment of weakness that it is the same as deliberately falling away from the faith or the same as holding Jesus to contempt - and therefore, neither is it the same as "crucifying once again the Son of God". If a Christian does sin, they are given the opportunity to repent and to confess their sin. And if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. I welcome any further comment or discussion with regard to this matter. Almost all men have to restrain lust while acknowledging that it is quite natural to be attracted by the opposite sex. To suggest that falling into temptation is like crucifying Christ once again is in my opinion a distortion of the Scriptures.

human trafficking is all too real, seen it with my own eyes. usery is what these markets are about for money. it reminds me that what we consider "entertainment" is often much more than that. seeing other people as human beings and given them dignity, even if they've lost it.

No, Strat. Let me be plain. I believe that there are none righteous, no not one. There is no difference between the sexes when it comes to the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life. There is only one remedy: Jesus Christ. Whom the Son sets free, is free indeed. We don't have to be in bondage...that is good news!
The point that I was making is that sin is only pleasurable for a season for those whom it has deceived/ensnared...then comes reality. If one knew the truth of what ensnares them, they wouldn't find it desirable. Ultimately,no one is ever happy that they sin. The wages of sin is death (destruction). If you think that people who make 6 figures and have fame are content, then you need to read what the Bible has to say about them. They really are "poor" little darlings...desperately in need of Salvation.

Maybe more information is needed?
And, Strat, the "poor little darlings who are doing exactly what they want" as you say...are clearly deceived if that is the case and in for a rather big disappointment. I have a difficult time believing that these women really enjoy being exploited and also enjoy being objects. I realize that this culture rewards women for being such ,as it is virtually impossible to find many modest women in this country, but even men who would fantasize about being in porn would be sorely (literally and figuratively) disappointed. Sin only has a season of pleasure, then it bites.
What you have a difficult time believing is that women are capable of sin, they must be deceived or tricked into it,otherwise their superior moral nature and natural inclination towards holiness would prevent it...in other words Feminism 101...I doubt you view men with same, shall we say....generosity of spirit.

People say, "when the real testing comes to America"... not realizing how deeply entrenched the spiritual battles of today are. in regards to entertainment, if one cannot turn off the smut and get to real grown up life, then he is already choosing the wide road. so turn the junk off!

but turning off what is evil is not enough. the CHristian has been called to something, that is a testimony through word and deed to the Savior. And turning everything off and hiding in little Christian enclaves is just as much spiritual laziness.

"wise as serpents, innocent as doves"

if we shut everything off and don't discern the times we are in, we are sheep led to the slaughter, taught all kind of myths and fables and being so removed from reality, we are of no use to the nonChristian who is swimming their way through a corrupt society. given over to humanism, psychology and isolationism, wanting others to be engaged only to live off of a little 2 by 3 inch screen is what so many are doing. truly, living in fear, wanting to talk about roses and pretty things and blown by every wind that comes through.

Anyone remember how Jim Baker was treated compared to Tammy Faye Baker, both were frauds and cheated people out of their money,Baker went to jail and rightfully so but little Tammy Faye with her mansions and air conditioned Dog houses was not held accountable for anything by the law or the public, same with the one with the big hair on TBN...living like a Queen on the money from people's Social Security checks and never once held accountable for it

Amen!

Rev 2
18 "And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write, 'These things says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet like fine brass:
19 "I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first.
20 NEVERTHELESS I have a few things against you, because you allow (tolerate) that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols.
21 And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent.
22 Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds.
23 I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works.

What bothers me more than anything and turns my face red is the blatant double standard. A man molests a girl and the crowds are enraged and ready to stone him. A woman molests a boy and she is tenderly interviewed under soft lights as they talk about how her father never loved her as she's handed a tissue to wipe her eyes. Just last night, a woman got a box which contained one of those robot babys to help determine if you're ready or a real baby. She took it out of the box and the first thing she did was to pull down it pants. Now, the baby was anatomically correct and she shouted, "it's a boy!" and kept saying the name of the private part over and over. She then snapped a photo of just the private part, and tagged it with the name of the private part three times, saying nothing else, and posted it to social media. Now, how about if a man did the very same, using the very same words?
The man would have been verbally hung out to dry and admonished on how inappropriate it was along with how it was in bad taste, odd, etc.
I could go on but it's these types of things that really bother me.

Amen to just saying, "no", to TV. We haven't had one in our home for almost 25 years now. Magazines, the beach, the pool are also thing we said no to.

Unfortunately the internet in some ways is much worse than TV ever was yet so "indispensable". It's making me start to long for the days before the internet and when PC's were rare.

Women are plenty tempted and driven as well. Seems to me that men always get the wrap as perverts and s*x starved maniacs who are frothing at the mouth for more. This always bothers me when there are the Chippendales and other male reviews, male escorts, male strip clubs, half nude men on soaps, and the like, p*rn mags just for women, not to mention female pedophiles, molesters and thise wwho r*pe underage boys, though it may be "conscentual", according to them. Not all men are monsters, most woman aren't monsters, but both are capable and culpable.
Anyway, when I read the headline, I thought it was a but strong. After reading the article, I realized that I may not be taking some forms of sin serious enough.
Feminism pure and simple, men are the problem, always, almost every sermon preached in today's pulpits places the blame for divorce and most of society's ills on men, usually including the nonsense that most women will follow a "Godly" man when most culturally acceptable male leadership can be summed up as ...."yes dear" whatever you say cupcake.

Woman in porn are often called "victims",yeah right, victims making six plus figures and sometimes much more doing exactly what they want to do...poor little darlings.

Too bad Piper can't get his boy "Potty-mouth" sex-pervert preacher Mark Driscoll to follow his lead. Piper's comments were good, but they would carry more weight if he would apply them to those he chooses to endorse and invite to his conferences like the false teacher from Mars Hill.

All of these comments are very encouraging to read. I was beginning to think that I was almost the who doesn't watch tv...not that being in the minority is problematic. It's good to know that there are Christians out there who don't compromise in this area and can see that "the emperor/empress" actually don't have any clothes-on...and that our children are keenly aware of it.
