How to Raise a Pagan Kid in a Christian Home

Unfortunately, our "good" objectives might have absolutely nothing to do with the gospel of Jesus Christ. And we inadvertently end up raising pagans instead of Christians.

Too many times, (Christian) parents have it as their goal to make their kids good and moral. It is as if the entire purpose of their family's spiritual life is to shape their children into law-abiding citizens who stay out of trouble. The only problem with this goal is that it runs in stark contrast to what the Bible teaches. The gospel is not about making bad people moral, but about making dead people alive. If we teach morality without the transforming power of the gospel and the necessity of a life fully surrendered to God's will, then we are raising moral pagans. ...

I agrees. I have seen kids grow up in church learning how to talk the talk and walk the walk but never being regenerate and never understanding the true meaning of sin and grace. And I think it comes down to how parents teach them about the gospel.

Chad727,

I second jj's 'amens'; it's so refreshing to read a comment like yours. How many are running around today professing Christ, busying themselves with various religious activities, etc. and thinking God will accept whatever we offer up under our own strength and understanding. They believe a verbal profession equals salvation.
Only the Spirit of God can reveal to us the truths you've stated; dying to self is so essential, and so misunderstood. Taking up our cross and following Christ is equally misunderstood by most. A.W. Pink's teaching on Matthew 16:24 is excellent- here's a snippet - " “If any will”: the Greek is very emphatic, signifying not only the consent of the will, but full purpose of heart, a determined resolution. “Come after Me”: as a servant subject to his Master, a scholar his Teacher, a soldier his Captain. “Deny”: the Greek means “deny utterly.” Deny himself: his sinful and corrupt nature. “And take up”: not passively bear or endure, but voluntarily assume, actively adopt. “His cross”: which is scorned by the world, hated by the flesh, but is the distinguishing mark of a real Christian. “And follow Me”: live as Christ lived— to the glory of God."

I just loved this article! I have no ability in and of myself to please God! God is not at all impressed with me apart from what Christ is in me! We are not given ability, we are given Christ Jesus, He is our ability! We must deny our SELF, pick up our cross, follow Him. Our independence, self sufficiency, our default -auto pilot setting is to be abhorred. We must be dependent upon Him! He is the only one capable of living the Christian life, and we must present our bodies a living sacrifice, surrendered to Him, that He, by His indwelling Spirit might make manifest the Christian life in us! We must abide in Him("for apart from Me ye can do nothing), He is my Rock, my Strong Tower, my everything! ( i can go on and on, but u guys get the picture - Praise the Lord!!). Psalm 40:16 let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The LORD be magnified.
Amen and Amen !
