Holy Land prepares for papal visit

Two days before Pope Francis arrives in the Holy Land, Israelis and Palestinians were putting the finishing touches Thursday on a flurry of festive preparations for the visit.

Municipal workers in the West Bank city of Bethlehem were busy hanging huge banners in Manger Square outside the Church of the Nativity, where Francis will celebrate mass on Sunday.

Giant posters of the pontiff with Palestinian leaders were also being mounted on lampposts near the main Israeli checkpoint leading to the city. ...

John 11:11-15 KJV
(11) These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
(12) Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
(13) Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
(14) Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
(15) And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

Interesting, the words "to the intent ye may believe".

Dorcas,
Thank you for your kind response. I have so many stories I could share with you concerning those I've had the privilege of caring for; it's a blessing to be able to care for them. It's also a wonderful opportunity to speak of Christ and the truth of God's word. I had one gentleman tell me that he went to the Catholic church all his life and never learned about God, and now he says it's too late. That was an open door for me to tell him about the true Jesus of the Bible. I also had the privilege of speaking with a woman who'd been influenced by the teachings of Jehovah Witness; God has granted me a wonderful ministry opportunity.
Do feel free to e-mail me privately anytime you wish, you are of great encouragement to me, along with JuneAnnette.
Ladybug, Thank you for your most kind offer to privately e-mail you.
Will keep that in mind. For a little season I will be off line. There are some personal issues that need my attendance. Will be thinking of you all and of course praying too. Would much appreciate prayer for this time that the Lord has me in.
Blessings and love in the Saviour.
Dorcas.

Mr Henry has this to say about the passage:

"We must be sensible of our wound and of our danger by it, receive the record which God has given concerning his Son, and rely upon the assurance he has given us that we shall be healed and saved by him if we resign ourselves to his direction. The brazen serpent's being lifted up would not cure if it was not looked upon. If any pored on their wound, and would not look up to the brazen serpent, they inevitably died. If they slighted this method of cure, and had recourse to natural medicines, and trusted to them, they justly perished; so if sinners either despise Christ's righteousness or despair of benefit by it their wound will, without doubt, be fatal. But whoever looked up to this healing sign, though from the outmost part of the camp, though with a weak and weeping eye, was certainly healed; so whosoever believes in Christ, though as yet but weak in faith, shall not perish. There are weak brethren for whom Christ died. "

Isaiah 45:22 KJV
(22) Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.

Looking = Living

No, BT, Amyraldism (Four point Calvinism), I would also suggest that you look at the video, Calvin's Wayward Children (MP3 file). It should be the fifth one down on the page. Or for some more reading material, Election: Whose Choice?.

BT, quite good post, but hardly relevant to what I was saying.

Observe:

Numbers 21:7-9 KJV
(7) Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.
(8) And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.
(9) And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

The folks who were involved were very concerned about their sins. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit. These folks were actually looking for a remedy to their dire condition, much like an enlightened sinner.

Moses made intercession for the people, and God gave the remedy. These folks were dying and knew it. They were not concerned about spiritual death but physical death. God gave the remedy and they took stock and listened to God.

I maintain that the atonement of Christ will save any that come to him in true repentance and faith in HIM. Faith in election saves no-one.

John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent ....
John 3:
12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
16 For God so loved the world, ...

v14 is a follow on from v12,13,
v12 Jesus directs their thinking away from "earthly" matters to "heavenly."
v13 refers to Jesus being God and coming down to earth - incarnation.
Therefore
v14 continues on this line saying that Jesus will be lifted up (crucified) and return to heaven from whence HE came.
v15 WHY?? Salvation of the believers - the elect.
v16 confirms salvation because of God's love.

Now was Jesus pointing to the ability of men?
No. He was pointing to the miracle of God.
You brought this (Moses) event down to earth and by it gave the onus of responsibility to the sinners.
That is not what Jesus is revealing here - But salvation by Christ crucified (Heavenly matters).

I see that "developing a heresy" is introducing folks to the well-known heretic Jacob Arminius. This is not good. We should be about the truth not the error. I advise folks to ignore that post, it will only make your head spin.

Circular Reasoning.

"Jacob Arminius held that man had free will for the initiation of repentance and faith. Yet when asked why some men exercised this freedom by responding and others by refusing the overtures of God, he replied in effect,"It is the grace of God working in them that makes them respond."
"Then why does not the grace of God act to make all men respond?"
"Because the grace of God is directed only towards those who God sees will respond."
And so we end up with the conclusion that the grace of God which brings a response is exercised to bring a response, and that it brings a response because this is why it is exercised. All men can respond, but only some do. Why only some?
"Because God enables them to by his grace."
"Why does He not then enable all men to respond?"
"Because He extends his grace only to those He knows will do so."
"Then what makes the difference between men?"
"The difference is in their responsiveness."
"How does this difference come about?"
"It comes about because God's grace enables those who do respond to respond."
"On what is God's selective enabling based?"
"On foreseen responsiveness in the objects of his grace."

The discussion becomes never-ending and there is no way to break out of it." (A Custance)

BT, how can I help you, I tell you what:

Observe how the Lord Jesus Christ himself used the illustration of the Israelite camp after they sinned and God sent venomous snakes to kill them all.

Moses interceded for them and God in his grace permitted them life, if only they would look up at a brazen serpent which Moses had made and put on a pole.

Now let me assure you that whosoever looked, lived. Whether it was only one, a hundred, a thousand, ten thousand or more, they all lived. If they had all looked, they would all have lived. They did not all look, therefore they did not all live.

Now observe what Jesus said:

John 3:14-15 KJV
(14) And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
(15) That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

Now please observe that the Son of God was not forever justifying his doctrine by mentioning election ALL THE TIME. Learn from HIM how to speak and talk about the things of God, and stop this incessant playing one string on your harp.

Quote;
"have said that Christ suffered sufficiently for the whole world, but efficiently only for the elect."

This also is wrong.

God knew precisely what HE was doing from the beginning. (Eph 1:4,5) He did not need to make the Atonement "sufficient for the whole world" - Since clearly HE did not set out to save everybody.

God is omniscient and foreknowing - With that insight and the sovereign and divine plan HE did not need to make the atonement available to anybody except those who HE had predestinated from the foundation of the world. Hence the "Limited Atonement" is Biblical factual and logical.

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

Eph 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

Calvin's commentary on this verse.
"He (John) added this for the sake of amplifying, in order that the faithful might be assured that the expiation made by Christ, extends to all who by faith embrace the gospel.
Here a question may be raised, how have the sins of the whole world been expiated? I pass by the dotages of the fanatics, who under this pretense extend salvation to all the reprobate, and therefore to Satan himself. Such a monstrous thing deserves no refutation. They who seek to avoid this absurdity, have said that Christ suffered sufficiently for the whole world, but efficiently only for the elect. This solution has commonly prevailed in the schools. Though then I allow that what has been said is true, yet I deny that it is suitable to this passage; for the design of John was no other than to make this benefit common to the whole Church. Then under the word all or whole, he does not include the reprobate, but designates those who should believe as well as those who were then scattered through various parts of the world. For then is really made evident, as it is meet, the grace of Christ"
I don't disagree with a particular redemption, but as Spurgeon said, the atonement must be infinite because of who HE is.

This is completely untrue!
If God willed to reach every single mortal in history, every single individual in nations, then it would be true.
God did not! That is blatantly obvious.

John UK wrote:
I see that quote of Mr Calvin where he most definitely declares that Christ died for the sins of the whole world
If Christ died for the sins of everybody then it would be totally impossible for God to send anybody to hell. That would not be just nor righteous.
Christ's death on the cross paid for the sins of "SOME" people - not all! (The elect) Otherwise God would be demanding justice and punishment twice for the same sin. That is neither just nor fair. God is righteous HE does not dish out the fraudulent and deceptive justice of the Arminian self savers.

John. Declare your affiliation to the Arminian cause and their god who requires the cooperation of sinners to save. Be honest for once.

Well look ye here. What an accusation! Are you sure you're not a raving Calvinistic Presby who are well known for telling lies and having a hatred for Baptists?

If you want to call me out on my doctrine, show me from mine own post where my statement differs from the 1689 Baptist (Doctrines of Grace) Confession, and I will hearken to you most diligently. But empty accusations with no proof is a typical Presby trait, and is akin to bearing false witness.

Now ladybug, one thing I have noticed about women is that when they are found out, they very rarely acknowledge it, but tend to slink off to avoid denting their pride. Me, I just apologise and get on with life.

As for the heart, mine is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, how about yours?

Now if you want to continue with this, please show me where my doctrine is "not consistent with the doctrines of grace" and we can take it from there.

Speaking out against doctrinal beliefs is entirely different than attacking someone as you did me and accusing me of having dementia. It's a sad day when professing Christians bite and devour one another.

As for the library, it was merely a suggestion. It seems you are very good at putting words in other peoples mouths. I did not say you had to go, it was a suggestion, nothing more.
Now it appears you've chosen to take a stab at my gender and insinuate I am so pride-filled that I endeavor to teach my brethren, again, this is nothing more than your opinion John UK, it's also a personal attack on me. May God reveal your own heart to you. Too many are very quick to attempt to remove specs out of the eyes of others and yet cannot see the log in their own eye.

I simply refuse to be drug down the road you attempt to take those who disagree with you down, it's not glorifying to my Lord. God commands humility and love in His sheep, not false accusations. Good day to you.
