Shotgun Weddings Give Way to Cohabitation in Surprise Pregnancies

A carefully planned destination wedding finally brought Sheila and Jared Elliott to the altar after twists and turns that included the births of two daughters, the deaths of his parents, and buying a house and car for their growing family.

“Things don’t always go in order as planned,” says Sheila Elliott, 29, a banker. “We had talked about marriage before I got pregnant. We were already working in that direction when it happened.”

Although the couple from Prior Lake, Minn., weren’t living together when she got pregnant, they bought a house and moved in together a few months before their older daughter Lexi, now 3, arrived. ...

Only a single person would make that comment. John, don't be so naive to think that someone who grew up for 18 years under the love of her parents is going to cast aside their wishes or that they haven't taught her better to go off and marry someone that much older than herself. Also, she may not need parental permission but your big wedding goes out the window if the parents are against it. If I were you I would set my goals a tad more realistic, you seem to be dooming yourself for disappointment. This, of course, is not in anyway your greatest need, but just offering friendly advise. Also, Loretta Lynn's husband was only 7 years older than her.
Lastly, gonna marry a Catholic girl (and lemme guess your children will be sprinkled in a Catholic church), another one of the Catholic Sacraments you are keeping in hope of gaining heaven. Your choice of actions continue to speak volumes.
If I want to have children(8 or 10) then I sure can't marry a woman my own age as she would not be able to conceive. So that means I have to marry a woman young enough to have 8 or 10 children. And I will insist that the babies are Baptized via Immersion as a dedication to Jesus. The Catholic Church allows Immersion Baptsim.

I wish to marry a farm girl from Eastern Colorado when I purchase a farm in Eastern Colorado and I find her in church in the nearest town to the farm. And it will not be a Mormon girl but a Catholic girl.

Bro. James, Traditionally the brides parents have paid for the wedding. That is a tradition in the United States that goes back a very long time. I am very cheap and am always looking for ways to save money.
Considering your looking for an eighteen year old wife, youll probably be older than her parents. If you really want to stick to tradition, youll ask her father for her hand in marriage, and he may say no because of the age difference. I know I wouldnt consent to my daughter marrying a man thirty some odd years older than her, and a few years older than me. Your biggest problem however, will be to find a true Christian eighteen year old who doesnt mind the age difference.

You crack me up sometimes. This along with the bit about Saturday vigil so you can lay around all day Sunday. Love the honesty. Better get moving though...you're no spring chicken. : )

Marriage, not unlike so many other things, has been redefined, trivialized, and minimalized. Marriage is no longer the special event it once was, nor considered a sacred joining by God. Sure, they go through the motions, say the words, and do the usual readings, but its all become a matter of meaningless ritial and the words, God's words, mean nothing. Not unlike having a child these days. What should be the most special miracle of a mother and fathers lifetime, has become a way to trap men, live off the taxpayers, or the mistake of having s_x for the fun of it, etc. So many children are being brought into the world who don't even have a chance because the parents are teenagers, drug addicts, abusers, criminals, have no means of support, didn't want them in the first place, etc.

Well, let's just hope that they're on board then

Trust me, as a married man, I can tell you that the size of the wedding means only a tenth as much on this side of marriage. Everything looks fuzzy in your memories. Everything but your wife. If she's there, then that's all you need.

And speaking of traditions, a far longer tradition is for the bride's father to give a dowry of some sort. If you're cheap, just ask for the money that could go to a big wedding be given for a dowry, and then have a small wedding. That'll matter a whole lot more than some ceremony.

I think what I find so intriguing is I never see these modern parameters expressed in scripture. People look to what pleases themselves in a mate. Scripture teaches us to marry, carry out our duties to our spouses, have children and raise them to be a testimony to the world of God. I fall short in this because I have "needs". We need to grow up.

Anyways, with all the fancy I must keep up with Joneses nonsense I see why people say it's "hard". But I agree with you...it should not be this way. You can have a beauiful, elegant wedding without going into debt.
Yes, SF, you raise a very good point. Many young women today lack basic feminine virtues and homemaking skills, which I find quite sad. Moms used to pass these on to their daughters. It seems like now the focus is all on superficial things like how "hot" someone is and how much sexual experience someone has. Since the Bible warns us to "flee fornication," that should be none, of course.
