To train up a Pharisee
Parental advisory: This article contains brief descriptions of brutal treatment

Between 2006 and 2011, three children in devoted homeschooling families died while being disciplined by their parents, professed Christians who reportedly read or followed Michael and Debi Pearl’s controversial parenting book, To Train Up a Child.

The parents are now behind bars, and their living children are with family members or in foster homes. No court has ever found the Pearls liable for child abuse, but lingering questions remain about whether there is a torturous underbelly to the parenting tactics of To Train Up a Child.

Twenty years ago Michael Pearl printed 30 copies of a patched-together book on parenting, taken from a variety of letters he wrote about how he and his wife, Debi, were using ‚Äútraditional child training‚ÄĚ with their five children. When the 30 copies were gone, he borrowed enough money to ...

Do not spare the rod nor consider your childrens screams. That too sounds radical but theres a flip side- wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God! So do all in patience n self control

a mother of a newborn should not be taking their advice and should read up on the long list of stories of what happened as a result of not feeding the baby properly and not taking care of themselves properly.

I was given a copy when my oldest was 2 or 3... I thought some of the methodology was a bit.... Extreme... (Such as the potty training by hosing off a child outside) but I followed the cases where the book was blamed closely; IF the parents had actually followed the book, they wouldn't have done the things that killed their children. Over the top; sure... But not to blame.
We have a culture that wants to blame all of their actions on someone else. Face it; those parents made a conscious choice to do what they did. Common sense would have told them it was wrong.
Unfortunately, common sense is not very common.

I agree with Jim. It's a good article that doesn't demonize the Pearl's. I find Michael Pearl a bit hard to "handle" ... but, he's not (nor his books) responsible for any of the deaths of those kids!

I think when you boil it all down, this is really an attack on Biblically training/disciplining our children. It's best for the world to pick on someone who is perhaps a bit more over the top than most. But, be warned that it's really an attack on all of us who seek to bring up our children in GOD's ways!

Also interesting that all the kids killed were adopted children! Why is that!?!

As I said, read the article SA has up -- to the end. Also some good reading material, Instructions to Husbands, Fathers and Their Wives.

Or for that matter a sermon on the topic, The Disciplining of Children.

Ephesians 6
6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
2 HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER (which is the first commandment with a promise),
3 THAT IT MAY BE WELL WITH YOU, AND THAT YOU MAY LIVE LONG ON THE EARTH.
4 And, fathers, do not provoke your children to anger; but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.---NASB
