Stop dressing so tacky for church

If the Rev. John DeBonville could preach a sermon to lift the souls of churchgoers across America, his message would be simple:

Stop dressing so tacky for church.

DeBonville has heard about the ‚Äúcome as you are‚ÄĚ approach to dressing down for Sunday service, but he says the Sabbath is getting too sloppy.

When he scans the pews of churches, DeBonville sees rows of people dressed in their Sunday worst. They saunter into church in baggy shorts, flip-flop sandals, tennis shoes and grubby T-shirts. Some even slide into the pews carrying coffee in plastic foam containers as if they’re going to Starbucks. ...

Seems like things have to be repeated over and over for you, GS, because you lack comprehension abilities. Anyone who's not out of their mind and knows anything about men's dress shirts knows that the top button on a men's dress shirt isn't there to button the top of the men's dress shirt, but is there in the event that a button ever falls off of the men's dress shirt. Why would anyone who knows anything about men's dress shirts ever button the top button thats only there for a spare?

downright scary, Christopher can read John Y thoughts and articulate them quite well. Now, if only he can reverse the process and get John Y to grasp his understanding of Catholicism.

No it is not trollish especially when the question was never answered as to why men feel the need to wear a tie with the top button of a dress shirt buttoned when it is more comfortable with the top button not buttoned.

Who cares! Quit with incessant, trollish rant about ties and whether or not to button the top botton.
Well it is not trollish discussion about ties and dress shirts because it is part of the subject matter of this this news article.

the homeless that I've worshipped with every week, come in as they come, come as they are. the disabled may interrupt the service along with a baby crying, and it doesn't bother anyone. it is nice to dress up and brighten people's day, to say this an important day and we worship the Lord today. people are dressed modestly and do what they can.

By the way, off topic, but so sad about the overturned, sunken ferry in Korea where 200+ teenagers got trapped and drowned. I can't imagine being a parent whose child died in any manner. Especially in there cases of missing children where there is never any closure.

Anyway, just a reminder that my comment below is just my opinion.

James 2:2-4

"For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;
And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:
Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?"

Well, I wear dress pants, dress shirt with top button buttoned (try and make sure neck size on shirts is large enough, looks neater IMO) and a casual tie (although it is usually doesn't make the trip back for the Sunday night service, maybe I should call it a carnal tie )
What is the sense of wearing a tie with the top button buttoned regardless if the shirt is large enough? I don't see the need to wear a tie with the top button buttoned and I have a dress shirt that is large enough. I also wear a tie with a casual shirt with the shirt not tucked in. I don't like to tuck the shirt in. I like to be as comfortable as possible.

Wow, this thread really blew up and there are some strong feelings. I agree with what Kenny said about knowing some people who chkse nit to go to church because they were uncomfortable with what they had, and let's face it, Christians whisper and gossip at times when someone seems out of place making others feel uncomfortable. For me, dressing "apropriately", not sipping coffee, or checking a phone, etc, during a service is about respect for a God that I think too many today have lost the fear of. As bad as I am, I tremble when I think about what God can do to me, and never forget how angry he can get while many seem to treat him as an aw chucks kind of buddy becoming complacent, soft, and losing sight of the awesome, incredible, powerful, God He is who demands, commands, and deserves the respect I think is waning today. Anyway, there's nothing biblical, so to each his own, but I think posters below nailed it about dressing appropriately and modestly, as opposed to dressing to impress necessarily. This is just how I've always leaned as is nnothing but my opinion. If If I was dressed up and someone sat next to me wearing jeans and a polo shirt, or whatever, I'm not sure I'd really even take notice. To each his own.

If it is uncomfortable to button the top button of your shirt, I would suggest that either you are tying your tie too tight, or your shirt does not fit properly. It is not the button's fault if you choose to cram yourself into a shirt that is two sizes too small.

Of course, there's no such thing as class distinction in church. Is there? Check out the leaders.

Kenny... I agree. I grew up Mormon. If you didn't wear a nice shirt and a tie you were an outcast.
In christian churches modesty should be.
