Penny, they kept the guns locked up even on bases in Viet Nam, Penny, except when cleaning weapons target practice, or under potential attack. Personally, over there I thought we should be carrying rifles on base to thwart any possible attacks. I doubt if the Army ever allowed this.
Actually, there would be too many accidental shootings no doubt happening even by the most careful soldier. Young men can sometimes be in ill-temper for a variety of reasons, so many more shootings could happen as well. No, in the states, unless you're an MP or on guard duty, I don't even see the need for having weapons on hand.
