Lessons From Vision Forum's Scandal

For years, the sinking of the Titanic fascinated former Vision Forum Ministries (VFM) president Doug Phillips. He founded the Christian Boys’ and Men’s Titanic Society in 1997 to promote lessons from the disaster, including “women and children first.” (Many men yielded seats on lifeboats to save others.)

The following year, Phillips wrote in WORLD: “Simply stated, that principle is this—the groom dies for the bride, the strong suffer for the weak, and the highest expression of love is to give your life for another.”

April 15 is the 102nd anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking. It’s also more than five months since the closing of VFM, a once-prominent Christian organization that also met a tragic demise. In the end, losing sight of “women and children first” helped sink Phillips’ own ship. ...

FG,

It is so refreshing to see more Christians like yourself calling out these men and the celebrity status they've been exalted to; Driscoll is another example. These men show NO true signs of repentance, no brokenness over their sins, no Godly sorrow. The whole Mahaney sex abuse scandal is just an outrage, and yet, he's embraced by his peers...amazing. Abuse is rampant in churches, and many seek to cover it up. That's just like the RCC and their homosexual priests scandals.

These celebrity pastors are forever promoting their latest book, their conferences, their teaching series, their study bibles, etc. and all for $$. It seems most have forgotten 'He must increase, I must decrease'.

Some of the recent goings on in Christian celebrity circles, like this incident and whatever incidents that may have taken place surrounding Sovereign Grace Ministries and CJ Mahaney and so forth, only goes to prove a certain principle. And that is that Christians need to stop putting other Christians on pedestals. No matter how "godly" or "humble" they appear or how many "blessings" we've recieved from their material, they are not to be exalted beyond measure, either openly or within our own hearts and they are to be subject to the same Berean scrutiny that even the Apostls Paul himself was subject to. In fact Paul had a proper perspective on "celebrities"
Gal 2:6 But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man's person for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me:
This is a healthy approach regarding "Christian celebrities" because after all, the best of men are men at best.

Sadly, he is only making matters worse by suing those who confronted him; I see no repentance and truly pray for his wife and children who are stuck in the middle of this.

I sincerely hope we will see true repentance from Doug Phillips, but it doesn't sound like he has come to that point yet... When I look at Doug Phillips, I see a spoiled child who has yet to become a man.
Agree
And how about the lawsuit against those Christians that confronted him? Its like a RCC Priest litigating against those that stopped him from abusing children.

Having said that...during my Christian walk, I have seen many a leader fall from grace ( or perhaps they never received it to start with?) And I hold both those in leadership and in the pew equally accountable. Leaders won't lead, and some church attendees hold the leader in higher esteem than Christ. Most of this comes from lack of biblical discernment; or failing to be grounded in the Word of God.
Secondly, I believe the Lord exposes those who are living in habitual sin, publically; in order to humble them. Perhaps this will lead to a full repentance, and possibly spare His true sheep from being led off a cliff.
We are seeing the sheep and the goats, and the wheat and tares principles clearly at work. No doubt, there will be more famous faces in the days ahead who will be exposed.
We just need to make sure we aren't in the number of the blind leading the blind.
well said!

It just occurred to me how many Christian leaders have been caught in Homosexual relationships and are still around,Eddie Long,etc....a leader is caught in an inappropriate Hetrosexual relationship which is still wrong but at least natural and they are history straight away....go figure.

The fact that Doug Phillip's lusting after a young woman serving as his children's nanny for over a decade (?!) indicates this was no mere fall from grace or backslide.
Phillips has more worldy endeavours to accomplish first.

{From the Article)
"Phillips’ attorney sent a letter on March 13 to Peter Bradrick, Jordan Muela, and Bob Renaud—three of the men who confronted Phillips last October. The letter accused the men of orchestrating a campaign of slander against Phillips, and conspiring to “destroy Doug Phillips, his family, and Vision Forum Inc.” (VFI stopped selling products from its website at the end of last year, but it appears Phillips retains ownership of the company.)

"The letter threatened a lawsuit but also discussed Christian conciliation. The letter noted Phillips plans to advance claims against “Vision Forum Ministries and its board members,” though the nature of those claims is unclear. Meanwhile, the woman may sue Phillips. She declined comment through her attorney, citing possible litigation, and Phillips’ attorney said her legal claims (still undefined publicly) are “false, defamatory, and made with malicious intent.?…”"

Our family learned a lot from VF. Many of the books on family discipleship, history, babies, family economics, dating, and homeschool lessons, was greatly beneficial to our family.
We need to learn from this. This could happen to anyone of us. It's a reminder to die to oneself Dailey. To " put on the full armor of God." We pray, for the families that are affected by this sin. That all come to true Repentance.

Perhaps we should just stick to the bible and not create these rock stars and monuments to men often referred to as "ministries" with fancy websites, logos, tee shirts, coffee mugs and endless programs and systems instead of the plain word of God.

Well reported article.
Legalistic movements such as Vision Forum foster nothing but pride....something that we all need to be on guard against.
Do hope this does not end up in litigation as is being threatened..the world is watching and this gives much occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme.
