Guns for Jesus: Churches fill their pews with weapons giveaways

What would Jesus shoot?

Some churches in Kentucky and in upstate New York are doing what it takes to get people into the pews to hear the word of God — and in their neck of the woods, that means giving away guns.

In Kentucky, where gun giveaways happen in some churches just about every week, a free raffle of 25 guns by Paducah's Lone Oak First Baptist Church got about 1,300 people into the church hall for a steak dinner and a pep talk by a gun fancier named Chuck McAlister who’s been hired by Kentucky’s Southern Baptists to help boost congregations by evangelizing — in this case, about guns and sin and Jesus.

A good number of those 1,300 may not wind up in the pews on Sunday morning; a lot of them go to other churches. And there was no Sermon on the Mount, with its remark about the blessed peacemakers, to generate big applause; it was McAlister displaying his grandfather’s gun and saying, ...

Churches fill their pews with lies and heresies as well, which do more harm than Guns on an eternal basis....so what's the problem ?

The right of self defense is the foundation of all the others, but one can't expect those who have never sacrificed anything for those rights to understand that....I always consider it such a shame that so many people died to give so many people something they care so little about.

Great comment brother Mike and to police one thing we are always blessed with in our society is that criminals always follow the gun laws of whatever country in which they reside.

Not directing my remark at anyone in particular, just in general at those who cannot bring themselves to understand it is the fallen man who kills. If you feel personally attacked, you have no reason for it. If you were my blood brother, I would tell you the same.

While the weapons fallen men use have varied over the centuries, it has not diminished the desire to use them. There are no civilized countries, only self deluded ones that think empowering fallen government but not the governed with weapons makes them so. But as you know it is governments composed of fallen corrupt men, not the governed that start wars, use and kill people, and destroy property, in a fashion and scope that individuals with guns cannot even conceive of doing.

Thanks jpw. Overthere, you are MORE than entitled to your opinion. Both situations to which you are referring took place gun free zones. So, the LAW abiding citizens did not have a means of self-defense. That is why the perpetrators chose those areas. If they had wanted to have a deterrent to the killers it would have been better to arm the school personnel. In fact it might have stopped the killings by the cowards who did them in the first place. Penned made an excellent point. The Sandy Hook was not even done by an assault rifle. NONE of the weapons used were obtained legally by the assailants. It seems like you have issues over there as well. But if you wish to share your opinion here, just know it is misinformed and inaccurate. Maybe your criminals are more law-abiding over there and just don't carry guns. rrrrighttt
No guns, see Matt 10:34, Luke 22:36 and Rev 19:21

Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Ephesians 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Ephesians 6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

Civilized society does not need guns. Civilized society relies upon a good justice system for justice upon crime in all of its ways and means.
We live in a fallen world only Christians can perceive that. In a fallen world we must expect crime in abundance.
What does the civilized society do about that? What they do is seek to create a lawful society with good administration, police and justice. Education must play its part in this.

The easy distribution and access of guns is an impediment and obstacle to a civilized society.
Whilst under the dominion of sin in a fallen world man will not live with his neighbour in peace.

To live in peace with your neighbour is and should be a witness of the church.

Therefore the Christian should always be against guns.

Christian witness is::
Luke 6:27 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, 28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. 29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also.

Would Jesus carry a weapon?
Christians do not carry guns.

US, I sympathize with your comments, knowing people personally who have saved lives, that do not make the news. There is the other side to this, in that hundreds of millions of lives have been taken by communist type places, and that preceeding these kinds of events is usually a purge of such methods of self defense.

Getting back to the fact that these preachers are probably of the Red Hot Preaching school of thought(lessness), these churches should all be identified and avoided.

Titus 1
5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you might set in order what remains, and appoint elders in every city as I directed you,
6 namely, if any man be above reproach, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of dissipation or rebellion.
7 For the overseer must be above reproach as God's steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain,
8 but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled,---NASB

I would think all of these pastors (elders) would fail in one or more of the categories above, and while many of us aren't looking for the job of elder, we should aspire to have the characteristics of a good one.

But then this is the part of the country that wants to play with poisonous snakes, and assault rifles are probably safer, since it would only be the strangest of accidents, which would take such careful aim to hit, very small minds.

The Columbine massacre happened during an assault weapon ban, and Connecticut has a ban on assault weapons which was in effect when Sandy Hook occured. Obviously, these stricter gun laws have no effect on gun crime since criminals do not follow the law to begin with. Also assault rifles only account for a wopping 7% of gun crimes in America.

from the article

According to the figures released yesterday, 3.6 per cent of the population of England and Wales were victims of violent crime in 1999 - second only to Australia, where the figure was 4.1 per cent.

Scotland had a slightly lower rate of violence, at 3.4 per cent.

In the U.S., only 2 per cent of the population suffered an assault or robbery.

99 percent of our nation can state "I have never owned a gun of any kind in my life and the last time I saw one (apart from American movies) was when I was in the military."

I promise not to say anything about Sandy Hook and Columbine since they've got nothing to do with inanimate objects do they? Mind you doesn't that matter which end of the inanimate object you are at?

...and John Y., you have been hanging around in Romish Churches too long. "When the Scriptures are confused or misused then too so will be the resulting practice. The only people who are obsessed with guns are liberals who imagine guns walk down the streets all by themselves, looking for people to shoot. This article is from the LA Times, a liberal rag. What it doesn't reveal, is how many gun deaths are there in LA, vs Kentucky, where those gun lovers live. Anyone can look up the info, if they aren't possessed by irrational fear of inaminate objects.

Booooo. Being an American in the Bible-belt means two things by default: you're a Christian, and you have an obsession with guns. Bible-belt churches are based more on tradition and redneck values than on the Bible.
False. Bible-belt Evangelical Protestant Churches are based upon the Bible as they preach the biblical doctrine of salvation. If a church wants to permit individuals with guns to pack heat in the church then a church has that right.
