Tattos Go Mainstream -- Even Among Christians

Many older Christians condemn tattoos by quoting the most direct biblical reference to tattoos, Leviticus 19:28: “You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord.” Others seek exegesis from pastors like John Piper, who said in a recent podcast that he receives emails about tattoos “almost daily.” Piper took two episodes to address the issue, and concluded by saying tattooing is not a sin, but be wise and skip it. The Leviticus passage is explicitly anti-tattoo, and “that should at least give us a few minutes’ pause,” said Piper. Tattooing in itself is not intrinsically evil, the popular pastor and author said, but the permanent nature of tattoos—with the painful and expensive cost of removal—may turn them into stumbling blocks later.

Others who profess Christ don’t skip it, but at least think about it seriously. Brown said she considered “long and hard” ...

You're not going to hell for having a tattoo.
but why get one? Because everyone else has one. Don't get a tattoo.
The old testament forbids it. That should be enough.

One thing is sure. Your calling and election won't be based on lack of tattoos.

They destroy their bodys; never giving thought to the future and a passing phase. Irreparable damage. There was a somewhat famous guy who suicided himself just recently. Very demonic in appearance and a very sad end for without Christ.

I look at this issue like this: #1, Were you created by Him with a tattoo? Answer: No. #2, Does God tell us what he thinks about them? Answer: Yes. Then shouldn't we obey Him? #3, Ask yourself one other question: If your boss gave you a rule to follow at work would you break it anyway? I hope not. So why would you go against what God says? Are we to justify following the fad of the day that violates His word with the excuse that the world approves of it? Finally, #4, is it worth possibly going to Hell for it?

Some preachers even get tattoos especially to be able to connect with their younger audience and to show that they too have a past. We become new creatures in God. Why have something that can be a stumbling block to another or a constant reminder of who you were

"... That is the way ancient pagans thought when they marked their bodies...."

Yes, history confirms that this is a practice to be avoided!

Great point, as was the rest of your comment. This touches on the future-oriented thinking I mentioned previously. Sadly, too many young women today have an "it's my body and I'll do what I want to" mentality. I don't fault a man for finding tattoos unattractive.

I think the best argument against tattoos is that we are to consider our body not our own, but God's, so whatever we do with our body is to be for the glory of God. The question that must be asked is-- how will a tattoo bring glory to God? If someone says, it's a means of bearing witness to Him-- doesn't Scripture say we are to bear witness to God by our works, not by lifeless marks in our flesh? (1 Peter 3:3-4). It is the inner adornment of the soul alone which is "very precious in the sight of God." Do you think a Christian tattoo will somehow strengthen your tie to God by placing of a permanent reminder of Him on your flesh? That is the way ancient pagans thought when they marked their bodies. They thought thereby to strengthen their tie to the deities they worshiped. Young women ought to think of pleasing their future husbands with their bodies, not pleasing themselves-- and many men find nothing attractive about words or images in black ink engraved on human flesh. So while I agree there is no direct mandate forbidding tattoos under the New Covenant, the principle on which tattoos were forbidden under the Old Covenant is still a valid principle. The Bible does not support the idea that we glorify God or strengthen our ties with Him through putting marks on our flesh.

Lol.

I think Leviticus makes it perfectly clear that tattoos are not for God's people. Indeed, as Christopher stated, many are not long-term or future oriented in their thinking when they get inked. Tattoos and wrinkled, sagging skin are not a good combination.
