Weekend Reads: Strange Fire

The female Pentecostal minister who narrated on TV how God raised her pet chicken from the dead was almost too much to take. Unfortunately, activities treading the border between blasphemy and absurdity appear to be standard across much of the Pentecostal and Charismatic movement. So says John MacArthur, who spares no harsh language in his exposé of the theological heresies and rampant moral failures of this movement’s leaders. Strange Fire: The Danger of Offending the Holy Spirit with Counterfeit Worship (Thomas Nelson, 2013) detonates enough theological ordnance to blow these false teachers sky-high. Patiently, MacArthur explodes the claims to continuing revelation, demonstrates that Pentecostal ministers have shockingly high rates of moral failure, and delivers a persuasive account of the Holy Spirit’s real work in the body of Christ.

New Testament prophecy is no different from Old Testament ...

I'm glad you understood where I was coming from, Dolores. Patience is a good word I should have used. I should have also added that I do continue with prayer; never totallt utting anyone off. I can understand a person being angry, passionate to the point of temporary blindness, having mental challenges, etc. I can continue on, no problem unless they are incessently abusive. What I can't undunderstand are the ones I just can't figure out. I've always been able to read people pretty well and sometimes see hope that others don't. So when I can't figure someone out over time...that concerns me and makes me very ununcomfortable. I know I can get pretty nasty when cornered, disrespected, feel insulted, etc, and it's an issue with pride that I'm trying to overcome. Not easy, but it's one reason why I just slap my hands together to shake the dust, turn around, and walk away on a few.

Christropher, I do know how you feel and you do have a lot of patience( one of the fruit of the Spirit) with so many lost causes that you continued to try to help but was like beating your head on a brick wall and it felt good when you stopped. So there does come a time when you have to shake the dust off your feet and move on to someone else God sends your way to help. I had to do this recently to my niece because of the loss of trust because of things done to me by her. I do not have malice in my heart against her but I've had to let go of the relationship and move,on actually I think God can work on her better if I am out of the picture. So I do see why you need to do this for their good as well as your

Dopey... In what kind of weakness was Paul speaking of?

Well done Dolores, keep up the good fight. As James tells us these posters are sent to try us.
James 1:2 "My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing."

Good morning, Dolores. I read down as far as where the "running with the big dogs" nonscense began but had to stop there because the intended manipulation made me nauseous. Dolores, since I have been around, I have always given the benefit of the doubt, to a fault, and defended many who others really couldn't stand, had written off, etc. I have always tried to back up those I thought were being bullied, and treated unfairly. I have also always gone out of my way to remain friendly to those who were dead wrong and even treated me poorly, hoping they could be reached with kindness. My point here is that I don't give up easy and usually continue even when people tell me to let the person go. When I do give up on, or turn on a person, its not a thing that comes easy to me. There is something very, very wrong in a spiritual way and I feel the person is too toxic for me to expend anymore energy. Something just isn't right and I feel like God turns my kindness switch off to these very few. You have a kind heart, Dolores, and like me, you give the benefit of the doubt to a fault, but it takes a lot for me to shut a person down and lock them out. Doesn't come easy but it's for good reason.

In 2 Peter 1:5-11 we are told of seven things we should "add" to our faith.one of those seven is brotherly kindness, and I see that one in you shining bright!
As I understand it's meaning it is simply "love of the brethren".
May we all posess this virtue not only outward toward each other but also inward in unity of heart and mind in the recognition that we possess a common life and have a common Lord and Saviour and destiny and are fighting in a common cause.
All of Gods Best to you and your family.
Dolores pay close attention to what Dorcas as written you for she has gotten to the heart of the matter in God's eyes.

Our gracious God has so many ways of telling us the same truth over and over again to show us His love for us and that we should have for each other and here is another instance of God revealing to us the truth of what Dorcas told you and the rest of us:

But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.
---1 Corinthians 13:13

Thanks to You, Lurker, for seeing my point and you, too, are kind hearted because of your concern for Jessica from Canada and she is a precious christian woman and I enjoyed her posts so much. I accept your apology," nail on the head" and I have had to ask forgiveness from others on here. Dorcas, you are my sister in Christ and you have been patient and forgiving of me and I understand that you care about those you try to help see things. Mere, it's not because I'm a woman because I have been called the antichrist because of a poster that I strongly disagreed with on another thread and a feminist on another thread( that one really cracked me up). Anyway, I am angry at no one on this forum, I consider you my friends who lift me up in prayer as we lift each other up, makes us stronger in Christ. Dopey, I understand what you are saying now but there for awhile I didn't know exactly what was going on because it was like you morphed into another person that I didn't know.I still consider you a friend because you haven't been unkind to me. We on here may disagree but that happens to everyone at sometime or other in our daily lives. Blessings and love to all.

Dolores, here's some more scripture twisting, as NRC and On the nail like to call what I do (3/3/14 2:07 PM) or as Dorcas liked to put it in this thread, my "manipulating you". :

First we read, “But thou hast fully known my doctrine.” Paul was preeminently a teacher. He was also an evangelist, but his great gift was that of teaching, unfolding the truth that God had revealed to him for the blessing of others. Second, inasmuch as Timothy had been associated with Paul for a number of years-ever since the early days when he first began to witness for Christ-the Apostle writes to him, “Thou hast fully known my … manner of life.”

It is a pitiable thing when one’s behavior is not in accordance with his doctrine. You have heard of the preacher who preached, “Do as I say, but not as I do.” That is a poor testimony. We cannot lift men higher than ourselves. If one is not living for God, is not walking with Christ, then he cannot be a real blessing to other people.

In writing to the Thessalonians, Paul said, long years before he wrote 2 Timothy, “Our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you.

Incredibly sad that Dolores admires this ability.
Now let's be fair to Dolores. As I recall she didn't say or imply that she admired Dopey's ability to twist scripture. She simply said she agreed with the scripture he quoted saying nothing at all of the dark purpose he intended.

What Dopey does is called verse launching and it's sole purpose is to use God's holy words to insult those with which one disagrees. Dopey is not the only one who does this on this forum. IMO, it's the lowest form of insult because it wreaks violence on God's word for personal satisfaction of the old man. Way beyond disgusting.

Dolores is a dear sister with an ultra tender heart who wants to maintain fellowship with Dopey. I respect that even though I want nothing to do with the man. Will you?

Dolores....please take these admonitions that are given concerning Dopey. You are a sister in Christ and we see him manipulating you with his silliness and flattery. He deceived us all for a season!
But read over all his posts and see how he twists scripture for his agenda.
He has maligned many of the Godly brethren on this forum. I hope I have not become your enemy because I tell you the truth.
In Christian love and concern.

No sarcasm on my part. Just sadness at your comment when I have seen so little from Dopey that is not wrested from its context.

Dolores a few questions for you, is the NT right in its attitude to false teachers and adherance to truth? Was The Lord Jesus unloving to name call the Pharisees and Saducees because not only were they wrong but they sought to drag others down as well. Do you suppose that they would have admitted to malice? If not, did they nonetheless demonstrate it?

I get the feeling that your circumstances are informing your theology rather than the NT.
