Imprisoned Missionary in North Korea Confesses “Crime”

A South Korean Baptist missionary held in North Korea appeared in a government-arranged news conference in Pyongyang on Thursday, saying that he had plotted to build underground churches in the isolated country to help undermine its government.

The missionary, Kim Jong-uk, 50, called himself a “criminal” and apologized for the “anti-state crime” he said he had committed against the North while working at the behest of the South’s National Intelligence Service.

North Korea announced in November that it had arrested a South Korean spy, but until Thursday it had rejected the South Korean government’s request to identify him. It was unclear whether Mr. Kim was speaking his own mind during the government-arranged news conference, to which The Associated Press and other foreign journalists in Pyongyang were invited. ...

Remember another baptist imprisioned there last month by the name of John Short. He was an Austrailian missionary in China and Hong Kong for 50 years. Last year at a bible conference he shared his willingness to give his life that N.Korea might have the gospel. On his second visit he and his christain chinese helper Wang were confronted by police about handing out tracts. Wang slipped away but John was taken. He now faces a min15 yr sentence. He is 75years old and will likely never see freedom again.

Mr. Archibald Alison's exhortation to a 3rd group: "A word to the ungodly. O ye atheists and ungodly magistrates, full of perjury and bloodshed, ye have nourished your hearts in a day of slaughter. The blood of the Lord's people that has been shed these eighteen or nineteen years (August 13,1680) within this city (Edinburgh, Scotland) will be charged home upon you as well as the assizers. Ye counsellors your work will be rewarded. Ye criminal lords remember; the saints shall judge the earth, and shall shortly be on equal terms with you; and they shall stand upon Mt. Zion with the Lamb and give their consents against you; and shall shortly cry Hallelujah, Hallelujah, to your condemnation! And therefore I obtest you in the bowels of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you will desist from your wicked courses, and lie in the dust and mourn for all your abominations. Except ye repent ye shall likewise perish! Ye ignorant and profane drunkards, swearers and Sabbath breakers, repent or else ye shall likewise perish!

A similar warning is given to the kings of the earth Ps. 2:10-13 who resist Christ. See Rev.18 & 19 The apostate church of Rome, her harlot daughters and their paramours the kings of the earth all in league against the Lamb who is the Victor, in His time

Last evening I read an exhortation from 'A Cloud of Witnesses' from one of the Scots Worthies - Archibald Alison. He gave his last testimony dividing his closing exhortation to three groups. For brevity sake I will give what he exhorted the 2nd group.

"I have a word to say to you that are godly; but alas! you have wronged Christ's cause; for which I fear you have lost the countenance of God, and will not get it again in haste. Ye have waxed fat and kicked. Ye have flung at God so to speak. Ye have laid a confederacy with enemies for a false peace. Ye have been crying peace and union with the indulged; because they are godly men. I say before the Lord, that ye and these godly men have most basely betrayed the Kirk of Scotland. Ye shall go to heaven in a fiery chariot. Ye shall hardly get leave to suffer, but go away in a stink [as an offense], for your complying and shunning the cross."

Will try to post his exhortation to the other two groups as well D.V.

I was reading in the prophets regarding fire and this element consumes chaff and refines God's elect. Christians have a Strong defender, in the Lord our Righteousness, but strong enemies too within and without. Until you're in the fire, you do not know all Christ will do nor what temptations will assault you.

Wouldn't that be just wonderful and to see it in soon.
It would be a great act of mercy on the part of God, to so show himself the living God to a community of people, thus dispelling the commonly held belief of agnosticism, that they come to a point of fearing God, which is the beginning of wisdom, and respond positively to the glorious gospel of God's grace, through which they might be saved.

Elise, thanks for the response. Its important to remember Peter had not yet recieved the Holy Spirit when he had denied Jesus Christ. Thus, relying on his own strength (or lack thereof) he faulterd. Thats why I made sure I put by the grace of God in my post. Facing dire tribulation, if I had to rely on my own strength, I would probably capitulate. However, since I have the Holy Spirit, I can rely on God to give me strength in facing such adversity, and glorify his Holy name.

Philippians 1:6 "Being confident of this very thing, that he that hath begun a good work in you will perform it in you until the day of Jesus Christ."

Have a blessed day.

Reading that he apologized really disgusted me. Why would he apologize and call himself a criminal for doing the Lords work? Such capitulation is unbecoming of a Christian, and really makes me question his standing with God. Id rather die for Christ and recieve a crown of life, than to live and bear such ignominy. By the grace of God, if I ever face such tribulation, Ill never deny my savior, or condemn the work he has called me to do.
I agree GS. Thanks for your comment, it was a blessing to me and others as well. Let's just pray and hope that this man repents of his denial and is willing to give all for our Lord and Savior who gave His all for us.

Just finished listening to the sermon "the brevity of life" and this certainly has an impact on me.

It's so easy for us to say that we wouldn't do this or that, but unless we are put in a situation like so many in North Korea we shouldn't judge, remember Peters words in Matthew chaper 26 verse 33 then again in same chaper verses 69 to 75.We would hope that God would uphold us, but in ourselves we can do nothing.
Best regards in our Lord.
