Number of US farms declines, farmers getting older

The number of U.S. farms is declining even as the value of their crops and livestock has increased over the past five years, a government census of American agriculture released Thursday says.

The survey, taken every five years, shows there were a total of 2.1 million farms in the United States in 2012, down a little more than 4 percent from 2007. That follows a long-term trend of declining numbers of farms.

Also, farmers are getting older — the average age was 58.3 years. But Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack points to a bright spot: a small rise in the number of farmers between 25 and 34 years old. ...

Hmm, don't know if the number of farmers are declining worldwide or not, but it could be the case? This is an interesting tidbit, New Research Shows That 500 Million Family Farmers Have Enormous Potential To Feed The World

WHOaily sugar intake 'should be halved' By the way too much sugar no matter what the source can be bad for you -- and your family.

Penny, Concerning the Scripture-that's what I thought. I was double checking. Thank you for the help.

Oh the bottle issue.....I've recieved a great deal of rude comments and looks for feeding my babies the way God intended for them to be fed-not on formula full of gmos and other stuff. It's "ok" for a woman to expose herself publicly but if a woman uses those same parts to modestly nourish her baby, well that's just disgusting. Blah.

Anyways, I have so many questions for you.. is there a way I could reach you off sermonaudio?

SF -- those verses are regarding meat given for sacrifices -- I don't really think that would apply to us, unless we are sacrificing animals.

the people would have been eating lamb meat which is very fatty and very good for you. the milk from a cow can be used for yogurt and butter. surprisingly the enzymes to help digest those foods is also in the milk, something missing from our modern versions. these are all blessings from the Lord. Scripture is clear, we were given the plants and animals for food.

there has been so much destruction of the woman's role. I do believe that us wanting to return our families to a healthy diet is essential. Others on here will encourage the highly processed veg oils which clog up the body, meant for long term storage!! (even in your arteries), and how great the gm corn/soy industry is. they also push boxed foods and microwaves. I think you and I both know what we do in taking care of others is not replaced by a box. This is also a day in which moms are pressured to give the baby bottles, its "progress" they say. real food has become controversial. just some thoughts, would love to hear yours.

In the Old Testament the fat was reserved for God. For example Eli's sons were killed because they took the choice cuts, the ones that belonged to the Lord, for themselves.

Thanks for the prayers Likewise, you and the rest of the brothers and sisters are in ours.
I'm glad you commented back. I have a question for you. In Nourshing Traditions fats are highly praised. This seems to contradict Leviticus 3:17 and Leviticus 7:22-25. If fat is so great then why did God command the Israelites not to eat it?

Natural honey, perhaps where your bees go buzzing around and finding flowers to feed off of, Beekeepers in northeastern France found themselves in a sticky situation after bees from their hives began producing honey in shades of blue and green (pictured).. The French, anyway, won't allow blue honey

The problem is not food that comes in a box, it's what's in those boxes. Even sugar cane eaten in the fields is unhealthy for a person, and chugalugging bottles of all natural honey won't do you any good either.

Jim, if you think nutrition ever came from a box, then you will do well. there was actually a reason for women to stay home. real cooking and real growing of food takes real time. we delegated that out to boxes. other countries would love to have the land we have. we have it and don't use it. we'll reap what we've sown.

you will have to call Europe, Japan, Korea fanatics for refusing many of our products, including wheat. that is millions of people. really? it is common to try to ostracize those who point out the obvious.

those who live by the dollar alone might remember that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.

Yes, Penny, much too much of those unhealthy natural foods going around! New GMO-Free Cheerios Arguably Less Nutritious Some scientists in Australia are working on mutant wheat to be drought resistant. (This means they take away a gene, instead of adding any--to make the anti-GM food fanatics happy) Drought Resistant Wheat A later story than this one said they have done it.

Anyway, young farmers in Nebraska have to contend with $15,000 an acre, at least in Eastern Nebraska for farm land, which means if they don't inherit it or marry into it, they have to rent it. It makes life a little difficult being a glorified sharecropper is what it amounts to.

that's right. very important issue. the future of farming in an era when people growing hearty breeds are treated punitively and natural seed getting crosspollinated with gm and ruined. the health is in the food and the food comes from the land. and the people are on foodstamps. total disconnect.
