‘Snake Salvation’ Preacher Dies After Snakebite

A prominent snake-handling preacher who gained a wider audience on reality TV died after a snake bit him during a church service Saturday evening and he refused medical treatment, police said.

Jamie Coots was bitten on his right hand by a snake, according to a news release, the Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader reported. An ambulance crew and firefighters tried to persuading Coots to go to the hospital, but he refused treatment, police said.

Emergency workers left Coots’ house at 9:10 p.m. where he’d gone after the bite, but less than an hour later Coots died, police said. He was pronounced dead at his home.

Coots was a third-generation snake handler and pastored a small Pentecostal church, Full Gospel Tabernacle, in Middlesboro, Ky., just north of the Tennessee border. Coots gained a bigger audience last year through the National Geographic Channel’s “Snake Salvation” reality show. From the ...

This is always everyones point, John. They are never telling you to go to this church or that church, but rather, to go to a church that's based upon the Bible alone...sola scriptura, not the bible, plus unbiblical traditions which contradict the word of God, plus Papal dogma, plus unbiblical rituals, etc, etc.
God all He wanted us to know within His Word. According to the Roman system of salvation, there are many extra biblical requirements so nobody can gain salvation by using the bible alone...according to them. One of many examples is how they teach that salvation is impossible without Mary. I could rattle off dozens of other requirements that nobody would ever even know about by reading the bible alone. How deceptive would it be of our creator to leave out such fatally important information and leave it to man to orally pass on such eternally vital things?

I wouldn't know a biblical based church from a taco bell? Well my brothers Non Denominational Church is a biblical based church and I have a friend who is a Baptist and his Independent Baptist Church is a biblical based church. All Baptist Churches and other Evangelical Protestant Churches are biblical based churches.

This is what happens when you get your doctrine wrong. Be warned!!
Even if you get your doctrine right, a snakebite can still kill you.

John UK,
I really don't see where you and I disagree! I never disputed the verses you cited from Matthew. I don't understand why you think we are in disagreement. Getting back to the subject in the article, just as this preacher misinterpreted the biblical passage referring to deadly serpents, he probably believed he would be healed and that is why he refused medical treatment when it was offered.
I only disagree where you said: "An example of misinterpretation based on not simply a single verse, but a partial verse, is the oft-quoted, "by his stripes you are healed." If read in context, it is obviously talking about spiritual healing, NOT physical."

So you denied that the texts in Isaiah referred in ANY way to physical healing.

So I posted

Matthew 8:16-17 KJV
16 When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:
17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.

Thus proving that the Apostle DID relate Isaiah's prophecy to physical healing also.

That's all.

I was in no way denying the Lord can heal physical infirmities, but the verses surrounding that much-abused verse that I referred to speak of Him being "bruised for our iniquities" and nowhere in that passage does it speak of physical healing. It is referring to SIN. Can the LORD OF ALL LIFE apply His Word as He sees fit as in the verse in Matthew you cited? CERTAINLY! But that is not the same as the way charismatics such as Benny Hinn claim healing with that verse, "wearing" it as a talisman.
Hey ho, as you wish, but I don't see how bringing in a heretic's interpretation into the debate gets you any closer to the truth. That is, the truth as found in Matthew's Gospel.

William, Ive seen Isaiah 53:5 abused by Kenneth Copeland to mean true Christians will never get sick! Like you said, the verse obviously is refering to his shed blood for the remission of sins, but by isolating scripture, false prophets can make the Bible say whatever they want.

2 Corinthians 2:17 "For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ."

two miracles are recorded. Both miracles served the purpose of validating the message about Jesus Christ that Peter was preaching. Miracles during these earliest years of the church's history were primarily done by the apostles. There miracles were done among believers resulting in immediate healing and restoration to life.

It is noteworthy that Dorcas after having been resuscitated did not become an authority of what heaven is like and what Jesus looks like. She died again and has yet to receive her glorified body.

News of the miracles spread and many believed the Word of God being confirmed by them. There miracles were also a fulfillment of the message and ministry of the Messiah.

Miracles are no longer happening today since the ministry of the apostles was completed to the early church. With the conclusion of the apostolic ministry, miracles were and are, no longer necessary for validation. Hence, as God's supernatural intervention, miracles do not occur today.

excerpt from the summary forMiracles Validating Apostolic Ministries

God can and may heal today, but never in way to make a person look like an Apostle.

I think the main point is spiritual healing, but do not neglect the obvious application of it which Matthew made, regarding physical healing.

In the old testament it was required that there be two or three witnesses before a judgment could be rendered. No single verse of scripture stands alone, but should be seen in the context of the verses which preceed and follow it as well as the larger context of the whole of scripture. An example of misinterpretation based on not simply a single verse, but a partial verse, is the oft-quoted, "by his stripes you are healed." If read in context, it is obviously talking about spiritual healing, NOT physical.

Adam Clarke on Mark 16---
Verse 18. Take up serpents] Several MSS. add ..., in their hands-shall be enabled to give, when such a proof may be serviceable to the cause of truth, this evidence of their being continually under the power and protection of God, and that all nature is subject to him. This also was literally fulfilled in the case of Paul, Acts 28:5.

If they drink any deadly thing] ... being understood-if they should through mistake, or accident, drink any poisonous matter, their constant preserver will take care that it shall not injure them. See a similar promise, Isaiah 43:2.

They shall lay hands on the sick] And I will convey a healing power by their hands, so that the sick shall recover, and men shall see that these are sent and acknowledged by the Most High. Several instances of this kind are found in the Acts of the Apostles.

That the apostles of our Lord should not lose their lives by poison is most fully asserted in this verse, and there is neither record nor tradition to disprove this. But it is worthy of remark, that Mohammed, who styled himself THE APOSTLE OF GOD, lost his life by poison; and had he been a true apostle of God, he could not have fallen by it.....

Every word, jot and tittle in the Holy Bible are from God. This includes verses, too. How many verses are required to create a biblical doctrine?

Every one in the Bible if we are to know the context of many solitary verses of scripture which get distorted to argue many, many heresies.

Not limited to Roman Catholocism, butI could list several off the top of my head which gave rise to the Papacy, Purgatory, prayers to the dead, etc, but you get the drift.

Tom of Waxahachie, What nonsense that there are no Bible centered churches in your area. If there are Baptist Churches then there are bible centered churches in your area as the Baptist Church is a Bible centered church as the Baptist Church preaches the biblical doctrine of salvation that salvation comes only through embracing Jesus as ones Savior by trusting in Him alone for salvation.
