Iconic Child Star Shirley Temple Black Dies at 85

Shirley Temple Black, who was one of the most iconic child stars of the 20th century, has died. She was 85.

The dimpled actress found fame at the height of the Great Depression in movies including "Heidi," "Curly Top" and "Bright Eyes" and later served as U.S. ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia.

Temple Black died of natural causes Monday at her home in Woodside, Calif., her publicist confirmed to NBC News early Tuesday.

Will the real John Y., tell the false John Y. or vice-versa, Come Out Of The Catholic Church

Shirley Temple Black was a hard hitting woman, she was surprising normal considering her background, basically Catholic-lite i.e., Episcopalian The Religious Affilation of Shirley Temple. She did have some abnormal traits, she was a Republican for one thing,

An interesting woman, though perhaps not Christian. Many actresses ended up far worse.

She once made national news by her opposition to homosexuality. Late 70's early 80's I think. I remember she was fired as a spokesperson for it. Anyone remember ?

Well done John. You always were the most theologically neutral person on these threads. BTW Do you still believe in Santa?

"Temple’s stardom didn’t allow her to be as devout as she would have liked. First of all, if she attended church, she found that the focus turned away from piety and faith and toward her and her celebrity. Second of all, she was quickly thrust into the adult world where it is difficult to not be a cynic and a realist. For example, she said:
I stopped believing in Santa Claus when I was six. Mother took me to see him in a department store and he asked for my autograph.
That aside, Temple seems to have been a faithful Christian and ultimately, it seems most appropriate to call her an Episcopalian." (hollowverse.com)
I stopped believing in Santa Claus around 8 I believe. Just because Temple was an Episcopalian doesn't automatically mean that she was not saved. There are saved individuals in the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church and Mainline Protestant Churches. It really is insane to state that there are no saved individuals in Non Evangelical Churches.

Hi Michael, I was talking about churches which blatantly add to and subtract from the Word of God and accept the ways of the world, no matter what God's Word might have to say about it, such as homosexuality, etc. I was trying to compare churches that live, breath, and teach the Word of God alone, and do their best to follow it as opposed to those who comprimise; even teach that God has changed, add their own doctrines in between the lines, etc. No, nobody is even close to being perfect buy we shouldn't be part of any system where man's new rules trump God's old, antiquated ones. I'm just talking about being part of a bible believing, teaching, living church, even though no church is perfect.

I don't disagree with that, John.

Forgive me for being a mite sarcastic, Christopher, but have you left Rhode Island yet? Where is it a Christian can go to avoid systems which embrace the ways of the world?

Being an icon of wholesomeness was a good thing. We could use more examples of wholesomeness Child-like joy and hope and wholesome goodness are good things.

And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 18:2ff)
