Successful state strategies saving babies

During my recent swing through four Midwest states leading the charge on pro-life legislation, optimism was a familiar refrain among a new crop of pro-life lawmakers.

“You don’t want to mess with us on pro-life issues any more,” said Kelly Hancock, a first term Texas state senator who graduated from Baylor University and has spent the past 30 years teaching Sunday school at his Baptist church.

Hancock is not the only state legislator making that promise, and backing it up with bills: Legislators have passed more than 150 pro-life laws since 2010. Last year, 48 states examined roughly 360 abortion-related measures. That included 28 states considering abortion limitations, a 60 percent increase from 2012. ...

So someone has said that laws against abortion are irrelevant.

How about the tree hugger wacko laws that are destroying the economy of the country? are they irrelevant ? apparently not.

How about the patriot act that is destroying the constitution ? is it irrelevant ? apparently not....and yes i know Bush started it but Obama has continued and added to it.

How about the intolerant laws that force one view on all in regard to Homosexuality and other perversions ? are they irrelevant ? apparently not.

How about the laws stemming from Roe vs Wade ? are they irrelevant ? apparently not

So our resident liberal would have us believe that laws in favor of abortion are relevant while laws against it are irrelevant.....which reveals his true stand on the matter.....thank you for the long overdue clarity.

Gary Becker created a helpful equation in predicting crime. It takes into account the value of the crime (and probability of success) and balances it against the risk aversion of the individual times the chance of getting catch and the likely punishment. Obviously, it's not flawless, because people are irrational at times.

In the modern world, children are made to be an expense, not an asset. Additionally, taking care of a child carries a lot of non-monetary costs (e.g. lost of leisure time).

Plugging that into the equation, I can understand why abortion laws are unhelpful. Why shouldn't fallen people pursue abortions? The punishments are usually nominal.

Abortion providers rake in the cash, and at what risk? If you want to successfully reduce abortions, the punishments must be likely and severe. Granted, some people will be irrational and/or risk-tolerant. Some will over-value the benefit of an abortion or undervalue the punishment and the chance of getting caught. I don't expect to see a complete end to abortions in our country. That's not realistic at all. I'd like to see a serious drop ( 95%).

Marty, when it comes to some laws, yes, why have them? Prohibition is thrown up in all our faces, one of the best arguments against it, came from an unexpected place,The Poisoner's Handbook, it did point out one good reason against anyway. It was a law to be broken, as perhaps even the majority saw it. I still think its an appealing idea.

I didn't say not to pass many of these anti-abortion laws, I just said from what I read from various sources, they are irrelevant. I'll just say, look at my first message on the programs that can have a lasting effect. While these laws make one feel good about politicians, something they want, but often they are undeserving in other aspects, e.g., Robert Francis "Bob" McDonnell was a mixed blessing as Governor, perhaps less of blessing than might be thought, McDonnell rejected plea offer to face one felony, spare wife any charges, avoid trial. It will be interesting how that turns out.

Makes perfect sense Jim. Why have laws at all? Heck, why pay people salaries? Obviously people don't respond to incentives and disincentives. Instead of carelessly saying something so crazy why not ask yourself. .. "perhaps abortion laws are too relaxed to be effective?"

Then we need to do away with all forms of prohibition on murder,to spare all but the most helpless will just make Hell hotter and put you there that much faster.

For the rest, pregnancies have to be planned. Chemical means of pregnancy prevention, and yes, abortion have also become more prevalent. So, use of surgical abortion will be less used. One would hope that the knowledge of Crisis Pregnancy Centers and organizations such as Birthright International will become better known. This knowledge outside of Christianity is one of the best ways to prevent abortion.

However, abortions rates especially in Western countries are about the same no matter what the legal impediments that are in place to stop it. It's folly to think one can regulate sin, that people don't want regulated. In other words it's ignoring The Inadequacy of Moralism.
