Theologian Hits Back at Writer’s Claim That Evolution Is ‘Settled Science’

Southern Baptist Theological Seminary President Dr. R. Albert Mohler Jr. hit back today at a writer’s claim that evolution is “settled science.”

Mohler published a rebuttal to Tom Krattenmaker’s recent op-ed for USA Today titled “Evolution Is Not a Matter of Belief,” calling the headline “one of the most misleading … imaginable.”

At the center of Mohler’s rejoinder was a reaction to Krattenmaker’s claim that evolution should be embraced as fact.

Just to be clear, Albert Mohler says belief in a god (a deity) and evolution are not mutually exclusive BUT he also adds that belief in the God of the Bible and evolution ARE!:

Albert Mohler: "There can be no doubt that evolution can be squared with belief in some deity, but NOT the God who revealed himself in the Bible, including the first chapters of Genesis."

Oh, and you might include the fact that evolution requires the dying of less evolved life forms and the God who breathed His word into the Bible (2 Tim. 3:16) says, "Wherefore, as by one man (Adam) sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned (Rom 5:12)."

Sin is defined by the 10 Commandments as self-centredness, first towards God and then towards others. It is the natural reaction of the mortal being to his mortal nature gained at the fall of man due to Adams own rebellion against God. It is instinct or nature of self preservation which the immortal need not concern itself with, though one such as the devil chooses to.

Did Mohler even have any Intelligent Design people to interview, ("The enemy of my enemy is my friend" ) Intelligent Design and Creationism Just Aren't the Same.

But even scientifically speaking Darwinism is not a "settled matter." The Scientific Case Against Evolution.

It's some sort of symposium on secularism and morality. It has a Jewish, RC, & an Evanjelly giving their perspective.

the problem is, the evanjelly is also an RC

He also signed the Manhatten Declaration and has refused to withdraw his signature. So, your link doesn't surprise me. Thanks.

yet Christians will go to an evolutionary doctor, get a diagnosis from an evolutionary perspective and take medicine designed with an evolutionary style understanding and regard for the human body. might the fruit of said theory be just as ugly as its roots?

I know nothing of the originator of the data, but his name is William Kilgore if someone is inclined to see what else he had to say. But, please remember, since I don't know anything about this fellow except the data I posted, please review with caution.

Thanks for your kind post.

The main problem is that most Christians don't take time to actually study the facts behind the science; they end up in debates with the "learned" and only wield the arguments that they have heard others make; in the end, they come off sounding like I do when I re tell a joke... We need to heed 1 Peter 3:15 "...be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you..." Being able to show how the "...heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork." (Psalm 19:1) is an important skill in this age of "...science falsely so called..." (I Timothy 6:20)

Everyone needs to listen to Sean Harris' sermon from last Sunday morning. We Christians should not cave on this issue.

Thanks brother. I have always said that if satan could convince mankind that evolution is true, then he can convince them of literally anything.

To me the most amazing thing is that the vast majority of those who believe the science behind evolution aren't scientists themselves. Talk about itching ears. I have had an ongoing debate with this Old Earth Creationist fellow for several years now, so I know what I am talking about. I use scripture, he uses his OEC scientists.

(There are upwards of 10,000 to 50,000 independent nerve cells in every cubic millimeter of cerebral cortex- 10 to 15 billion altogether; each nerve cell is able to receive simultaneous information from thousands of cells, integrating and then funneling this new information to many other cells; consequently, the number of permutations and combinations of circuitry and sequences becomes astronomical.) There are in the human body 600 muscles, 1,000 miles of blood vessels, and 350 arteries important enough to name. The skin spread out, would cover 16 square feet. It has 1,500,000 sweat glands which, spread out on one surface, would occupy 10,000 square feet and cover five city lots, 20x100 feet. The lungs are composed of 700 million cells, all of which we use in breathing, equal to a flat surface of 2,000 feet, which would cover a city lot. In 70 years the heart beats 2,500,000,000 times and lifts 500,000 tons of blood ... The nervous system, controlled by the brain, has 3,000,000,000,000 nerve cells, 9,200,000,000 of which are in the cortex of the brain alone. In the blood are 30,000,000 white corpuscles and 180 trillion red ones. It is easy to believe that the very hairs of our head are numbered- about 250,000.

Evolution. Theistic evolution

Quote;
"Unfortunately, some creationists actually do argue that ‘Evolution is just a theory.’ What they usually mean is ‘Evolution is not proven fact, so it should not be promoted dogmatically.’ (Therefore, that is what they should say.) The problem with using the word ‘theory’ in this case is that scientists use it to mean a well-substantiated explanation of data. This includes well-known ones such as Einstein’s theory of relativity and Newton’s theory of gravity, and lesser-known ones such as the Debye–Hückel theory of electrolyte solutions and the Deryagin–Landau/Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO) theory of the stability of lyophobic sols, etc. It would be better to say that particles-to-people Evolution is an unsubstantiated hypothesis or conjecture." Penny; Speciation is a good word, but generally I use Natural Selection. Natural selection denotes a selection, based on pressures put on the organism, of alleles that are pre-existing in the genome. (This happens frequently) Evolution refers to the mutation and as a result, the availability of NEW alleles that were not previously present. (Which has never happened in observed science)

Will, if you have a better word, I'll take it! but yes, variation within species is obvious, we are not clones of the generation before. but not gaining information, no. (you throw bike parts in a bag and cause an explosion, you will never get a working bike!)
NOW someone tells me.

I wondered why that didn't work. I kept getting more bike parts after every explosion.

Thanks jpw. Now gotta figure out what to do with all those bike parts. Maybe I can sell them on ebay

Without getting too involved,
Entropy is the word you're looking for Christopher.
And penny, I wouldn't even use the term microevolution. The word connotates that macro could be possible by years of micro, but I understand that what you mean is variation within a kind of species, but not gaining information evolution.

sure there's micro evolution, changes within kinds, but macro, come on now, when does reptile skin suddenly morph into a feather, now really? this was a theory put out before modern genetics...

people will probably move on to new theories such as aliens creating the world, any crazy idea to absolve themselves from what the world around them explicitly says.... there is a Creator.

the world is fallen, that's why there's death. time and chance are terms for gamblers not a way to make life out of nothing!
