Ordination of Atlanta Teen Called to Preach at Age 5 ?
Jared Sawyer Jr., a 16-year-old from Atlanta, Ga., who has been preaching for more than half of his life, was ordained as an associate minister at his Baptist church over the weekend and among supporters on Facebook offering him praise were others concerned about his lack of formal theological training.

"I like his ambition but he really should get a seminary degree first or study Theology....too many incompetent self-proclaimed pastors here," wrote Marion Morris on WSB-TV's Facebook page featuring video coverage of Sawyer's ordination. The news item had about 5,700 "likes" and more than a thousand shares, and the on-going about debate about Sawyer's ordination has led to hundreds of comments. ...

Christ Frost, that happened to me in a United Methodist. The pastor was young and about the same age as the young adults were he was preaching to. We were in our early 20s to early 30s. This man preached that Jesus was not born of a virgin and tried to tear our faith apart through his destroying the miracles of the Bible. I felt like I was in the twilight zone, it was surreal, couldn't believe what I was hearing. Thing is the older people got angry at us for arguing with him one friend's aunt told her that she didn't think that she knew enough about the Bible to argue with a preacher. My friend told her aunt," that's a pretty sad thing to admit to." We started Bible Study groups among ourselves to keep the faith and encouage each other. That's the key. Know what God's Word says, depend on the Spirit to lead you into God's Truths and stand firm. I finally had to leave that church and drove 15 miles to one that I knew taught truth and they had a great youth ministry.

Getting back on topic...has anyone heard this young man preach? I admit that I have not. But I don't think it is absolutely necessary to go to seminary to preach God's word. It is quite possible that seminary would actually be detrimental. Osteen went to seminary, and didn't we all just finish bashing him recently? I would modestly propose that anyone who is truly horrified by the thought of a teenage minister, should perhaps examine their true motives. Are we afraid that we might have to do a little extra work and check on what a young pastor preaches? Aren't we supposed to be doing that anyway, regardless of the age or education level of any pastor? Have we become so used to just sitting there and trusting that our pastors will teach us correctly, that we don't bother to make sure of it?
I personally listened to this young man in the video that was joined to the news article.
I turned it off after a few minutes...my spirit was not receiving any of it.I listened also to the NIF program with Pastor Sturm and he confirmed what I was hearing also.
I for one am a Berean as we are instructed by scripture to be.

Good morning Delores! Hope you had a restful nights sleep! It is hard to know sometimes whether we stand on solid ground or perceived solid ground. We hold so dearly to our interpreted experiences that we sometimes see them as truth, when in fact, it was maybe dimly truth, mixed with God's saving grace! I am so thankful that He is willing to be patient with us as He gently leads. In my walk, I rely heavily on my husband's guidance (which is fairly young and yet God has made strides with him that, well, frankly I am jealous of!) and on this verse "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." (2 Tim1:7). I have found that by running absolutely everything through the lens of Scripture alone, my experiences are better refined to reflect Christ's intent and I certainly see more clearly that there is Christ, the solid rock I stand on - ALL other ground is sinking sand. God bless you sister; may you find His love in a new way today!!

Chris, that was a kind, loving thing you said about Cab and I remember how you kept encouaging me when I got off on the wrong foot in the beginning. I'll remember and have open mind with others and much patience as Dorcas, Penny, john UK and many others have had with me. I have even had a change of mind about Billy Graham after listening to comments and hearing what he said to Larry King.I'm still puzzled over that one.
Dorcas, you have a blessed day, dear sister and you too Chris.

Thanks Dolores, and to be clear, my comment includes myself, of course, and I need to do a better job practicing what I preach many times.

Hi CAB...why in the world would you think that? I have been around for maybe 2yrs now or so and never once did I think they were one in the same. If anything, John is Street Preacher...ha-ha. Just kidding, and no, Dorcas is a lovely Christian woman, and John is a lovely Christian man. I know you will disagree because of the heated threads but I hope the two of you can, well, three of you can get to know each other better via the discussion of other topics, etc.

Thanks for the mention on the commentary, Dorcas. For anything other than the obvious, we should always keep an open mind on many topics, whether it be the one at hand, or any other. We all come to the table with lifetimes full of preconceived ideas and subjective beliefs/opinions that we grow up listening to, being taught, etc. The problem is that many tend to turn that which really can be argued and opposed into cold, hard fact in their minds; closing it up tight so that they can never hear anything other than what they have been taught.
Again, just speaking in general and nothing to do with the thread. One thing, one important thing I have learned since being here is to have an open mind and listen to all sides before I come to any conclusions or pass any judgements, no matter what I happen to believe or presently think about whatever topic.

Lisa, personally I would rather have an older preacher as my pastor, also. Every now and then they bring one older preacher that once was pastor of the church I attend back to hold a three day meeting at a Senior Adult Conference. He was really a good preacher..and he knew his Bible.I think you would have to have college and a theology degree to pastor a church in today's world. Much different now than when I was a teenager.
