Church of England accused of dumbing down baptism service

The Church of England has been accused of "dumbing down" the baptism service by changing its wording so parents and godparents no longer have to "repent sins" and "reject the devil".

A trial of the new wording, aimed at making it easier to understand, will last in parishes until Easter.

The former bishop of Rochester Michael Nazir-Ali, writing in the Mail on Sunday, branded the change part of the "constant dumbing down of Christian teaching" rather than making an effort to explain the meaning of baptism. ...

He is speaking to Hebrews about the various forms of washings (baptisms) performed in Judiasm. He says to move on from those things, he isn't endorsing them!
God, in His wisdom, used the Apostles to accomplish baptism in the early church through the laying on of hands. Perhaps to give them credibility. At any rate, they also healed and wrote the Bible (God's Word). Again, Jesus said John baptized in water, doesn't mention anything about a new water baptism, and then skips to the baptism of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5). Why did the Apostles lay hands on people for them to receive the Holy Spirit?

Hebrews 6:2
Of the doctrine of ***baptisms****, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

In Spirit Baptism we are entirely passive. We do not need human beings for that.

The Lord's commission in Matt 28 was to be performed by the disciples, and even though you may wish to brush their baptism under the carpet, no honest person can deny the facts.

Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” (John 4:10 NKJV)

He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” (John 7:38 NKJV)

for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” (Acts 1:5 NKJV)

So when God commanded the Apostles to baptize in His name, what baptism was taught by Jesus? Remember too, there is but one baptism.

one Lord, one faith, one baptism; (Ephesians 4:5 NKJV)

No, but neither will you find instructions on baptizing in water. Jesus taught the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
Throughout the Gospels baptism stands for water baptism (baptism of the Holy Spirit was yet to come and that The Lord had to explain later to the disciples). We know from the early church records that the formula of baptizing in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit was only ever used of water baptism. The Lords parting commission to the disciples is that this form of baptism, viz. water baptism was to be carried on even to the end of the world. But you can glibly dismiss it as inconsequential or pointing to Holy Spirit baptism without so much as an ounce of proof?!

Not at all. I'm saying, there is no instructions in the Bible to baptize in water. When Jesus taught about baptism, it was about John's baptism or the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Anywhere in the rest of scripture it is always baptism in the Holy Spirit. Except in Acts, which is written as an historical account of the early church.

And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. (I Corinthians 6:11 NKJV)

In this verse, for instance, the washing is not referring to water baptism but to the baptism in the Holy Spirit.

Jesus was Baptized in the River Jordan in water. So water is to be utilized in the Sacrament of Baptism.

Hey Baptists!
Do you think these verses imply that GOD hasn't revealed His whole counsel to you? And that is why you don't have a Covenant of Grace with Christ???
Psalm 25:10 All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.
14 The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant.
Oh and the word here recorded "testament" is diatheke in the Greek.
Which is the same word for "COVENANT" - So blood of the Covenant - Has it been shed for YOU???
Matt 26:28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
Have you ever studied Baptist Covenant Theology? John Owen agreed with it! What a shame you are so ignorant.

Gal 3:17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.

Gen 17:7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.
# Note "God will establish"
# Note "Everlasting Covenant"
# Did GOD lie about the "everlasting" status of HIS promise/Covenant?
10 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.
# Note "My (GOD's) Covenant therefore OF GRACE ALONE.
# Note Command to Keep thus obeyed by God's people alone.
# Note Covenant to KEEP is between God the disciple AND THE DISCIPLES CHILDREN.
They who reject the Covenant God made with HIS people - Are not HIS people.

UPS, this circumcision shows an adult acceptance of the Jewish faith. "Two areas will help us better understand the possible origins of baptism. The first is Jewish proselyte baptism. In the first century, a Gentile convert to Judaism was required to undergo circumcision, to undergo a ritual bath or cleansing called baptism, and to offer a sacrifice."--Gil Rugh excerpt from, Baptism: Truth or Tradition.

In our church we neither have neither infant baptism nor infant dedication.

Teen Christian who was your remark directed to? Sometimes I do forget to look over old threads, but I think you will notice I answered UPS's question anyway.

We also have a CAB in the UK, it's called the Citizens Advice Bureau. Most helpful, and manned by volunteers.

CAB wrote:
MORAL: If you DIE IN YOUR SINS, you WILL GO TO HELL.
You need to heed that advice yourself, for if you do not believe in substitutionary atonement, you will indeed die in your sins. There is no other way to get rid of your guilt.
