Rick Warren on Redefining Marriage: I Fear God's Disapproval More Than Man's

Pastor Rick Warren of Southern California's Saddleback megachurch explained his position on tolerance, homosexuality and marriage during an interview with Piers Morgan on CNN, telling the journalist he is most concerned about the attempts to redefine the term "marriage."

"While I may disagree with you on your views on sexuality, this does not give me the right to demean you, to demoralize you, to defame you, to turn you into a demon," Pastor Warren stressed on the onset.

Tolerance, Warren said, used to mean that we treat each other with mutual respect even if we have major disagreements. But that has changed. ...

The same to you brother. Remember, he considers you and I to be part of that (whatever it was)triune thing. So you and I are "definitely" on the right path.

Like I said, Im no fan of the Purpose Driven programs. I think Warren takes Scripture out of context to suit his goals, but then again so do you. I have much more empathy for Warren. Warren does so in a vain attempt to help people, you do so in a selfish attempt to try to hurt them.

Frank writes:
The purpose driven ministries are only difficult in that Satan has hidden his true agenda within these ministries by making them alternately fundamental, liberal, moderate, evangelical, and new-age all at the same time. When this occurs, one day they will seem okay, the next you aren’t quite sure, and perhaps on the next you will denounce them altogether. They are tricky only to the extent that they on occasion preach something that makes sense and since we are so hesitant to say something is unclean after God has declared it clean, we are often confused and perplexed as to what to do or say. Christ to them is a means to capture the unsuspecting and no more.
Frank- I would have been proud to write. That myself- tempted to paste and send to all my unsuspecting friends !

"explained his position on tolerance, homosexuality and marriage"

As GOD explains in Eph 4:17,18 the reprobate lives in ....
" ... in the vanity of their mind, 18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:"

Thus darkened, alienated, ignorant and blind to the life and truth of God.

These are the worldly people we have to live amongst and only God can make any difference to their oblivious life, heart and minds. The reprobates then are ignorant and blind on their way to hell.

We can tell them what the Bible says but being blind and ignorant they cannot receive the truth or the light. Part of the meaning of "vanity" in v17 is morally depraved.

The Sodom and Gomorrah affect we see growing in the nations today is symptomatic of the sin dominion of people in total depravity and ignorance.

Christ to them is a means to capture the unsuspecting and no more. I can only assure anyone who reads this; that those we are doubtful about, those in the leadership of the purpose driven movements, have long departed from agonizing about what they are doing and saying. Just turn on CNN or Fox and see their expressions as the lost praise and/or acknowledge them. We are the only ones that agonize, not them. They will say those who disagree with them are simply jealous, wrong or envious of them. Yes they will say that!

For once I agree with rick warren and I thought that mostly he did ok here. I think he took the issue of stoning off on a tangent that I wouldn't have taken it on- but yep glad he had a wide audience to speak out the truth. It's not just marriage though is it I mean the whole act, the whole concept is not acceptable in the eyes of god. The redefinition of marriage is a red herring- maybe we should classify marriage as Christian marriage or heathen marriage ( ie they can redefine and do what they like but we get to keep and promote the real thing- the life long union of one man and one woman).

"I'm more against the redefinition of the term 'marriage' than anything else," the pastor responded. "I don't think other groups get opportunity to redefine a term..."

“There are many things in the Bible that are no longer practiced, such as stoning to death an adulterer, Morgan then said.”

I think if Warren was not the greatest chameleon in the professing church today then he would have denounced homosexuality instead of concentrating on homosexual marriage. How can something that is an abomination to God even be discussed civilly. Warren should have given God the glory and simply stated that it is an abomination and shouldn’t be practiced at all, much less given legal status.

Also, he should have told Morgan that the only reason homosexuals are not put to death in our modern society is because we are not under a theocracy and therefore there are no religious courts that would decide this. But God’s views have not changed regardless of our different cultures.

Warren is right this time, a rare thing. The issue is redefinition of marriage. That it is homosexuals pushing it is included.

You answered your own question and it is the perfectly correct answer to this same question when posed concerning all of the others, such as Joel Olsteen, etc, etc.
The mega church pastors are right up there with the politicians who tell everyone what they want to hear by using very creative and deceptive tricks. They say a whole lot, but leave little tiny holes where the meat should be so each person can take away with them whatever it is they choose to believe; whatever makes them feel good. Basically, they say a whole lot of nothing and make it all sound oh so intelligent, profound, and wise, while answering nothing.

Why doesn't he just come right out and say it: Homosexuality is an abomination in the eyes of God, and that sodomites need to repent and put their faith in Jesus Christ for salvation.

That is right GS, He has been given a platform to speak the truth, in love, and give a reason for the hope that is in him. Some may think that "in love" means using ambiguous wording, like Warren does, to soften the blow of reality. Homosexuality is certainly not the only sin we are to denounce and abhor, but it is the battle of our generation and should not be given a foot hold in our conversation and witness. There is a way to present, to share without being hypocritical or pharisaical, but we must stand against homosexuality, heresy, abortion, gluttony, and every vice that is rampant in our society by presenting the truth, with grace, without equivocation to the watching world.
