Barbara Walters Decries Presidents Swearing Oath on Bible

As a host of the daytime talk show "The View," Barbara Walters questioned why politicians, including the presidents, swear on a Bible while taking office when there is separation of church and state.

"That is very true, but it starts almost with the oath of office which usually ends with 'So help me God,'" Walters said during the talk show, after actress Jane Seymour's remarks over a new political ad by Democratic Sen. Mark Pryor of Arkansas in which he apologizes for backing President Barack Obama's signature health care law, or "Obamacare," and also highlights the importance of the Bible in politics.

Seymour told the hosts of the show Thursday: "I think it's really unfortunate when you have to bring religion into politics. I think religion is a very personal thing, a very personal thing." ...

Moral, I understand from Scripture. Immoral Webster's 1828: "Inconsistent with moral rectitude; contrary to the moral or divine law; wicked; unjust; dishonest; vicious..."

When I think of amoral or without moral compass, I think of neutrality or being without knowledge of the moral law. According to Acts 17:30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

The world, at this time, is willfully ignorant of either moral law or the resurrection. For it is a rare individual who has not heard of the 10 Commandments or the Resurrection.

That said; Men who have rejected the light and life of Jesus Christ, which the Scripture refers to in the Jews as the result of blindness in part, in Gentiles as darkened understanding( Ephes. 4:18) must be mercied (Rom. 9:14-24)

It is our responsibility to recognize the visible body of Christ, by external profession of the Truth. Good fruits in the visible Church have good roots. Christ is the true vine, vital branches abide in THE Way, THE Truth and THE Life.

plain and simple... she's not doing her job. if there was ever an era of huge life-changing stories it is today.... she doesn't have the courage to take it up, but would then force the people to change their traditions instead...

its very, very weak.

Many, if not most, of today's newsmakers are lacking something within because they are amoral newsmakers, not news reporters. Lapdogs for power, not investigators of it. They produce nothing, but merely repackage events to present them to the public as though important, and to sway thinking to whatever cause they deem necessary to result in utopian outcomes. Because they produce nothing they are inherently suspicious of those who do produce, and therefore are often seen being critical of producers. Because they are amoral, they are blind to their own blindness. Imo, they aren't nerely as smart as they think.

Penny,
What an accurate description of what has happened to journalism in America! I have never seen it put that way, but that is exactly what has happened. Too many journalists, under the spell of Obama's vision to 'fundamentally transform' America, have traded in their calling to 'protect and preserve the free press' in order to become priests of the "Order of Adunu," devoting themselves with fanatical zeal to indoctrinating the masses in the teachings of their Adunu (antichristian despotic utopian nanny state)religion. It is so strange, as if our press corps were converting en masse to some strange new religious cult under the bewitching influence of a charismatic cult leader. Like the judges that our president is appointing, more and more members of the press seem to be turning into Obamabots. Weird, I say!

The supposedly barbarous ancient Anglo-Saxons imposed heavy penalties on oath-breakers.

Sworn oaths today, in an age when even Christians do not take their oral promises very seriously, are merely an empty formalism. Or else the god to which they refer may merely be their bellies.

I'm looking at a Washington Post interview here, she says her heritage is Jewish but raised as an atheist, it appears?

have watched many of her collegues abdicate their journalist positions to protect and preserve the free press, rather trading it for visions of antiChristian despotic utopian nanny states, not impressed. have watched a generation leave their "journalism" behind...

My hope for her would be that she open the gospel of Mark and read about the Messiah.

Exodus 20:7; Lev. 19:12; 2 Cor. 1:23; 2Chron.6:22

Rev.10:4-7

"The attitude assumed by the Angel of the Covenant is very impressive, instructive and exemplary: "his hand lifted up to heaven" This is the external attitude of solemnity most becoming the jurant when performing the act of religious worship, the oath. Abraham in the presence of the king of Sodom used the same form appealing to the Lord the Most High God, possessor of heaven and earth (Acts 17:24,25; Gen. 14:22) "Kissing the book" (laying your hand on it?-my question) has no example in the Bible; hence it is unquestionably of heathen and so idolatrous origin and tendency. No Christian can thus symbolize with heathens without so far "having fellowship with devils" as really as eating in their temples." 1 Cor. 10:21
From David Steele's 'Notes on the Apocalypse'

WCF Chap.22 1. A LAWFUL OATH is part of religious worship, wherein, upon just occasion the person swearing solemnly calleth upon God to witness what he asserteth or promises; and to judge him according to the truth or falsehood of what he sweareth.
2.The name of God ONLY is that by which men ought to swear; and therefore it is to be used with holy fear and reverence.
Therefore to swear vainly or rashly, by that glorious and dreadful Name;

My question, even before reading this story, well, comment, I guess, is...what a joke. Everyone swears into office, swears to tell the truth, etc, etc, as if the ritual invokes some magic mind controls beam that forces everyone to be honest. Politicians swearing to tell the truth, be honest, etc in office...criminals swearing to tell the truth and nothing but the truth, etc, so help me G*d...what a joke.
I think in the early days, they knew better but the point was that if they lied, God would judge them in the end since they swore on His word...

Acts 17:22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

25 Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
